Aho: Symphonies #2 and #7 Vanska/ Lahti Symphony Orchestra
Mozart: Die Entführung aus dem Serail Fricsay/Berlin RIAS-Symphonie-Orchester
Gernsheim: Complete Symphonies Siegfried Koehler/Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz
Wilhelm Peterson-Berger: Complete Symphonies Jurowski/Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Saarbrücken, Norrköping Symphony Orchestra

3 out of the 4 composers, this will be my first experience with them.  I'm familiar with Mozart, just not with that opera ;D  Looking forward to listening to these :D

As for Brian, he needs no introduction — on this forum, anyway. Probably the first of many Brian purchases to come. :D

The first is so different to the later ones, I find. Much easier to get into, despite the length. Well, the symphonic part at least - I still can't endure the last of the choral movements.

And Bruckner... a rather good choice :D

Is that sixth movement too sprawling for you? The 'Te Deum laudamus' and the 'Judex' movements (4 and 5) are more compact, I agree. But that last movement is a big adventure, containing some of the strongest music in the whole of the symphony, I think.

Ah well, it doesn't matter... I am glad you like what you can like about it!

P.S. Or do you mean the whole of the Te Deum?

The large final movement - the first two choral movements are more managable. I find the symphonic part remarkable - completely contrary to accusations of wallowing and excess (as much as I like Elgar, his smaller symphonic works contain more of these moments). The way it is scored isn't exessively dense, and all three orchestral movements contrast well with one another

Thank you for the entire Brian folder BTW, I grabbed them all a few months ago, and I am very glad that I was introduced to the 1st by the Boult, as I don't like the way the Naxos one has been described by some. I'll work on that last movement, though. Heck, I am getting an urge to listen to it now. *does so*

Okay, I gave in:

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41YrioefJZL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

now I have both the boxes. THis one is used from Amazon marketplace so it may be the defective 1st edition but actually I don't mind. In 10 or 20 years maybe the defective edition will be worth more...like a coin from the US Treasury that got stamped the wrong way maybe.

Yes, that's what I tell myself regarding my own 1st-edition copy. ;)

Jezetha, I've downloaded the Boult "Gothic" a few days now, and it should eventually find its way to my ears.

I'll let you know when it does. And thank you. :)

My pleasure. And - no rush!

If anyone here can locate 1 & 2 at a decent price for me, I would appreciate it.

Very groovy! You chose wisely. Also get this:

Fabulos high voltage live performance of the 4th in the well known revised version, plus Schubert's 4th and Mendelssohn's overture to "Die schöne Melusine".

I also have a line on this 4 disc set for 40 bones.  Thoughts?

Yes. Buy. Essential Schubert listening. I don't know if the price is the best you can currently get, but you have probably researched that.

No, but you can get all four plus concertos for $18 + shipping from MDT. The box doesn't seem to be listed at any US vendor.

Excellent.  If I cannot find the other disc for a great price I will only be out $5 for the cd I purchased today and I will just throw that one in Harry's refusal bin.  Thanks Miloš!

Find the best price and pull the trigger. It's an excellent set, different from any other you'll hear and (if you're anything like me) one you will be returning to and treasuring for years to come.  :)

Dave, when this arrives, I have a question about it. The "Back Cover" scan on Naxos' website shows that the back inlay on the CD lists the total time of every track as 00:00. I can't believe that they'd allow such a humongous typo to really get on the back of the CD, and have been aching to find out if it really does list a string of 00:00's.

My advice would be to sample before you buy, Bill, :)
Though I'm a Harnoncourt fan this is not on my list of favourites.
But, like Brian pointed out - it's definitely different and interesting.

If you can deal with the download thing, then you can get a pretty good price on the set here.
