Now that looks promising! I haven't heard Oistrakh in this recording, but from the recordings I have heard him in (of the Tchaikovsky), I wouldn't expect it to be anything but memorable. :) Great choice on the Beethoven, too.

Puccini, the almost complete operas on EMI. Included are Caballé-Domingo in Manon Lescaut, Freni-Gedda in La Bohème, De Los Angeles - Björling in Butterfly, the 1965 Callas Tosca, Birgit Nilsson's Fanciulla and Turandot, Gheorghiu - Alagna Rondine and a Trittico that mixed the old (Gianni Schicci with Gobbi - De Los Angeles) with the new (the other two opers under Antonio Pappano.

I've always wanted to listen to some of these: the Caballé Manon, Freni Bohème, 1965 Callas Tosca and especially De los Angeles as Butterfly. And it was high time I replaced my worn lps of the Nilsson Fanciulla. 17 discs at just over 3$ each, I just couldn't resist. I already have most of those (no Rondine) in the Decca Tebaldi box. In those days EMI and Decca had distinctive products and that was especially striking in their opera releases. So, instead of duplicating them, I feel they're another distinctive take on familiar works.

Annoyingly someone snagged Hewitt's Bach keyboard concerti from under my nose, but on the the other hand I overheard the staff saying they would put new stuff on the sale shelves so I guess I'll have to make another raid in a few days.

I see Verklärte Nacht but what else is there?
Aside from the CD, everything is written in...I think Chinese (I do not know the difference).

The tracks are:
Schoenberg
1-5 Verklärte Nacht
Berg
5-8 Lyric Suite
9-10 Concerto for Violin and Orchestra "to the memory of angel"

Pierre Boulez is conducting NY Philharmonic.

Oh, I think I might have the same recording of the Berg on a different disc. Just to let you know that's not the entire Lyric Suite. I have this recording, with the Janáček quartets.

I can't comment on performances but the music is fantastic.

A bunch of wind-based works by Krommer - quartets, partitas, etc. A 2-disc set on Supraphon.

That's interesting, and something I've been considering myself, for a while. I'd like to hear (that sort of) an alternative take on the Pictures.

Do share your impressions. :)

Look foward to hearing and sharing; there's other Rattle recordings I've seen with the BPO and if this disc is a keeper than I will gladly explore the others.

Assuming that this is with the winds of the Czech Philharmonic, you must have had quite a treat!

[loud clearing of throat, uncomfortable stare onto tips of shoes]

One wishes not to take away a bone from a dog... nor unduly influence before hearing. But if you hear anything special in any of the Rattle recordings with the BPO, do let me know. [I've not heard the Brahms and Bruckner, admittedly, but I simply didn't feel like even giving them a try.] I've heard SirSimon and his band live, since, and enjoyed their performance (Turangalila and Wagner - T&I Prel.&LoveDeath) very much. But the recordings sound so...  so interchangeable.

Haffner

These two, I really got a great deal on both of them.
