Simpson symphonies, we have a winner. Problem is, I bought the same set and then just had to get the SQ's and assorted chamber music  ??? Fortunately the Simpson CDs often appear in the Hyperion bottom 10 sale so I picked up all the discs pretty cheap that way over a year.

In today's mail from Amazon: Thibaudet's Satie:

"hey, they made a movie about
Mahler, you ought to go see it.
he was as f*cked-up as you are."

To be technical, purchased yesterday:

Concertos 24 and 26 were never released previously because both pianist and conductor were not really satisfied with the acoustics, and never took the project beyond the initial edit.   Decca has now done post production work to remedy the acoustics and secured permission of the heirs to release the recordings.    A first listen through did not reveal any glaring flaws, but did provide some very lyrical slow movements.

I might add that next month EMI is releasing a new group of their Icon sets, one of which will be Sra. De Larrocha's complete recordings on that label (almost completely Spanish composers, it seems, and including a recital in which she partnered with Victoria de los Angeles).

That Gielen Stravinsky disc has some of my favorite works - let us know how you like it.

The new erato

I find the Gielen a superb disc. Add the Ancerl disc on Suraphon:

STRAVINSKY Les Noces, Cantata, Mass. Libuse Domaninska, Marie Mrazova, Czech PO / Karel Ancerl. Supraphon Ancerl Gold Edition volume 32

and you've got my two favorite discs of late (OK les Noces is not exacty late) Stravinsky.

Some random second-hand acquisitions today:

(The Bavouzet Debussy disc is the one with the Etudes and Images.)
"I don't at all mind actively disliking a piece of contemporary music, but in order to feel happy about it I must consciously understand why I dislike it. Otherwise it remains in my mind as unfinished business."

FWIW, Dave, it has my seal of approval. Great sound and performance.  8)

Scarpia

Decided to take the risk that it would be too weird.

Well, some of it is too weird for me.  But some of it is also weird and wonderful.

How else will I know if it is too weird or not.  At 5CDs for $25, can't go too far.  Plus there's the chance that it will go out of print and become one of those CDs that everyone is looking for.  Then I will clean up!

George - you're on the back of my mind, as usual - but being a medical writer, SDs (i.e. standard deviations always affect my decisions) - if both you & Sarge feel that this is a superb set, then SOLD!  Dave  ;D

... I agree with George: that set won the prestigious Golden Antoine some years ago.  ;D

BTW, how is the sound quality of Ciccolini's recordings on EMI? I am considering this 5-CD set:
