I love that set, but I don't know if you will enjoy its sound quality and, principally, those eccentric performances. I feel you are a little bit "fussy" on those matters, dear Scarpia:)

I'm particular, but I do like things that have a clear interpretive force.  What I mostly don't like is blandness.  In any case, I already have the Ciccolini, and these seem to be the opposite.

We could check with k a rl, but I'd wager that the modernists dream too. :)

Wouldn't have it any other way!

It's all k a rl's fault. The samples indeed show a beauty that I don't recall Gergiev conveying in these works. Plus it was under $20 shipped.  8)

Splendid, George!

Or, at least, they have some vivid nightmares.  :D

A bit pricey, but it's the original issue of this CD and it's Richter/Schubert, so I had to have it. Plus, Mandryka recommends it.  8)

Are Philips CD's still available these days?  I thought they have all been re-issued under Decca.

George,  How do you like this set so far?  I have owned the set for quite a number of years ...

Any new re-issue will be under the Decca label, anything originally issued under the Philips label and still in print continues to be sold under the Philips label.

Went to Tanglewood today and picked up these:

and two CDs by the bassist Edwin Barker, one titled "Edwin Barker plays Three Sonatas for Double Bass" (Schubert Arpeggione, Hindemidth, and Vivaldi Sonata #3 in A Minor (Originally for Cello))

the other is titled "Concerti".  It has the Double Bass concerti of J.B Vanhal, Theodore Antoniou, and Gunther Schuller, as well as the encore "Failing" by Tom Johnson.  Gunther Schuller conducted the Pro Arte Chambler Orchestra on this CD.

Listened to the Vanhal on the way home, performance was pretty good, but the sound quality was not great.  The bass was very muddy, not recorded well.  But I still enjoyed it.

I just "pulled the trigger" on this mega box set  :o :o :o..... ;D:

I do not know if this is good or bad??  ???  Besides Moszkowski's and D'Albert's piano concertos I am not familiar with any of the other works in this box set.  I am not even familiar with the names of most of the composers in this set.  I promised myself that I would never buy a boxset of miscellaneous works and performers but I just could not resist picking this box set up (20 CDs for 39.95 euros is not bad!!)  Oh well I just hope this impulse purchase proves to be a jewel.  After all it says on the box "RARE AND SPECTACULAR PIANO CONCERTOS...."  :-\.... ::) or have I fallen for a very clever marketing scheme???  ??? ???

otare

That is a very good set. Old VOX and Turnabout recordings from the 60's.

Just ordered this - now have everything by Bach for keyboard that I need (want!) :):

They are decent performances, not the best of recordings. some will disappoint and some will delight. But you paid rather a lot for this set. I only put in 20 euro's for the set. And on another note, if you really are interested in unknown piano concertos, Hyperion has a good offer in this. See my thread about it in the dinner. The recordings are far superior in performance and sound, although more expensive.

Thanks Harry for the feedback.  Like I said this was an impulse purchase, I am on holiday in Spain at the moment and did not have enough time to research prices before purchasing so I have to live with the price that I found this box set for.  Anyway, I am familiar with the hyperion series and they are very expensive so I have to live with this set at the moment  :-\.

Yes Hyperion has a offer, at 8,99 a disc, not much but all in all pretty steep, if you would buy all 51 single discs.

I bought that CD used. The new "Originals" version has a sonata performance that I already own in two incarnations. Plus, I wanted the original issue of this Schubert Lieder CD.

I have only ordered it, haven't received it yet.

Now:

Didn't have this recording with du Pre and I own all of her other recordings, so this is very well essential to me.
