The operas I ordered with Cheryl Studer, conducted by Sinopoli, arrived today: Tannhäuser and Salome.

Hmmm...haven't heard that Salome (or any other!) for quite some time.  Maybe it's due.  ;)

Welitsch was my first Salome, on record and on CD....the final scene anyway. Magnificent.

Sarge

A few years ago I bought maybe 6 or 8 recordings of the final scene, by all sorts of singers.  Two of those were with Welitsch (two different recordings), and they are perhaps my favorites.  Even with the OK sound (these are from the mid-1950s) her singing and acting both come through quite vividly.

Today I received:

Tristan Perich: 1-Bit Symphony - An all-electronic piece.  The handmade packaging (below) IS the recording; there's no CD inside.  You plug in headphones to a jack on the side edge, and listen away.  Alex Ross just posted about it today:

Love the cover photo and the delivery method's intriguing.  How's the music?  (Ross's Rileyesque report tantalizes but leaves much to the imagination, and though I darned near wore out Rainbow forty years ago, today it wears me out!)

Edit:  I see that the appearance is not just a photo, but the actual chip and circuitry enclosed within the case.  Cool, but if the music is not good, then it's just a gimmick.

I listened to the clip that was provided.  Stylistically, it's not my cup of tea, but I heartily applaud his creativity.

I use a Pioneer RG Dynamic Processor RG-9 and it's fantastic. Really warms the tone and gives much more clarity:

I've been collecting this cycle CD by CD,  and am waiting for two more to come in (Overtures and Symphonies 3/4)
Be aware that Zinman and the Zurichers recorded not only the Symphonies, but the Overtures, the Piano Concertos and Choral Fantasy (with Yefim Bronfman), the Violin Concerto and Romances (Tetzlaff),  the Triple Concerto coupled with members of the Tonhalle performing the Septet, and the Missa Solemnis (but not, as far as I know, the Mass in C).

There's also a 2 CD set on Arte Nova of the Schumann symphonies.

I did not pay much for the entire set a few years ago.

That's correct. It's just a dynamic range processor.

Just placed the order on the following CD's this evening ...

It is always interesting to compare sound processing in the analog domain vs sound processing in the digital domain ...

That was the only turkey from the Schiff Bach series.  To see it reissued as an "original" seems surreal.

I dont think I really gave it much of a chance the first time around but I have been enjoying Schiff's Partitas so much this week that I decided to try it out again - I think even if it turns out to be a turkey I am going to have to force myself to like it as I have now paid for it twice! ;D.

A whole slew of Ms in the mail today: Mahler, Meier & Maazel; Martinu & Martinu; Mercury.

I now have Kubelik's first and last Má Vlasts--and thinking about buying one of the middle ones. I love overkill  ;D

What a huge difference for Kubelik between his very dramatic "young man's" Ma Vlast with CSO and the
final version of the older Kubelik which provides a more relaxed nostalgic take on things.....
