Album covers to the rescue! ?

Filling in my stock of early keyboard music substantially. I did consider pacing myself instead of snatching up so many things at once. But which ones to take now and which to postpone? "Everything" and "Nothing," respectively, seemed like the best way.

Malcolm Proud - Purcell
Frisch/Cafe Zimmermann - D'Anglebert
Barbara Maria Willi - D'Anglebert
Jean-Marc Aymes - Frescobaldi
Piet Kee - Bruhns/Buxtehude/Sweelinck
Bob Van Asperen - Froberger

Wow! :) Impressed by your choices. You are certainly on the money with that great Froberger series by Van Asperen. I think I'll take a leaf out of your book in regards to the Aymes/Frescobaldi - I've seen that recomended before. Would welcome some feedback on that! :)

I also liked that Forqueray. If you like French harpsichord music, maybe you could be interested in this 4-CD set:

Seconding Antoine here! :) If I had to recommend only one Rannou issue, it would be this. Great set.

I'm usually not quite as excited about the violin series, but the clips souded great and so far everything I have read about it has been enthusiastic. It's high on my wish list.

So far Neal there was not a single dud, in this series, and I have them all. Unfortunately I fell to late in the piano series, and JPC is selling them for a whooping 20 euro's, with all respect considering that I have maybe 5 from this series, it would make me bankrupt in 15 minutes. Well I know for a fact that they are going to box them eventually, so I'll wait a little. :)

Well, I've got a lot of listening to do, but I've certainly enjoyed dipping into those Frescobaldi discs. The music just overflows with invention, and Aymes plays with both great spontaneity and wonderful control. A great deal of care has obviously gone into the tunings and instrument choices. On the disc of Twelve Capricci, we hear in various pieces a clear-voiced harpsichord, a compact organ, a claviorganum (hybrid harpsichord/chest organ), and, in Capriccio XI, organ with a recurring tenor motto sung by Stephan MacLeod. Some of the chromaticism is astonishing. I purchased mp3s, so I don't have the booklets, which I assume would say more about instruments, tunings, and so on; but on the other hand IMSLP.org gives me a complete set of scores.

I'm almost certain you'll love these discs. I'd rank them alongside the Van Asperen/Froberger set, based on what I've heard of each so far.

People have mentioned the Ravel operas as important and I don't have good recordings of them.  I like Ansermet in Ravel and these recordings are often cited as epitomes of the genre, so I have been staking them out.  Lately Australian Eloquence have been expensive to get through amazon marketplace but someone listed this set for 9 bucks and I snapped it up.

That's set is excellent, especially when it is considered like a whole. But my absolute favorite in the "Pièces de clavecin en concerts" is this cheap disc on HM/Musique d'Abord:

New release of this one:

The most courtly imaginable version of this charming music.  :)

Aha? Listening to testbits on jpc, sounds interesting. I liked Rousset's Scarlatti sonatas very much.

Edit: From the test bits I'd say I find the warmer sound and the slower tempi of Rannou more appealing, but Rousset on the whole seems to be more interesting and less "samy".

Canceled today:

[asin]B000004CYS[/asin]

Ordered with a borders coupon, but have lost faith in their ability to ship an order and canceled it.  (Had another Borders order and found that my order was chronically listed as "backordered" when the site said the item was in stock.)  The biggest question, do they have the wherewithal to actually cancel an order.

Sorry to hear that. You may end up eating that coupon before all is said and done. :-\

I have found the item listed for a price I am prepared to pay.  But Borders has not acknowledged my cancellation, and I don't want to risk getting two of them.   :-\  I wish they'd liquidate them, already.  Emerge from bankruptcy ready to compete, who do they think they are kidding?

Borders is a lousy company as evidenced by their poor business practices. They haven't even acknowledged your cancellation yet? That's just moronic.

Well, I should have known better than to try to scam a company in Chapter 11.
