Oh my, my. Aren't you lucky! :) This might sounds terribly unmodest, but I'd really appreciate feedback on all of them! :o Especially the Palestrina, seen Masolino (or whatever his forum name is nowadays..) recommending it. But Bruno Giordano doesn't think well of it - one of the very few Amazonians (at the US site) whose opinion I value - especially in Early Music. On the other hand the many recorings roaming about by the British ensemble do not appeal to me... (Bruno favours the Tallis)

Morning Q.

I do find almost all the recordings by the Tallis Scholars very appealing.  I have also just about run out of their recordings to buy on the Gimell label ...

I don't quite get the "math music" comment, but perhaps 12tone is trying to say that it is "nerd music".

If they ship the right thing, then it was an irresistible steal:

Something very odd about this.  When this item, listed for an absurdly low price, was noted on amazon.co.uk and amazon.de I checked amazon.com and it was listed there as unavailable.  After you posted that you purchased it (apparently at amazon.co.uk) it subsequently appeared at amazon.com for under 5 bucks.   All three sites listed the vendor as Zoverstocks, which might lead a person to believe that there was only one copy.  But why did it appear on amazon.com after it was sold on amazon.co.uk?   Zoverstock is a legit supplier, I've bought from them numerous times with no difficulties.   Maybe processing delay for the listing in the US.    In any case, it is worth the 5 bucks just to get an answer, so I ordered it.   Shall we place bets on who gets it and who doesn't?

Note added:  amazon.de still lists it as available from Zoverstock for a bit under 5 Euro.   ???

Definitely. Rubbra's music is some of the most humane, and least cerebral, made. :-[

Well, last time I tried listening to a symphony of his it just had no...emotion.  It was so heavy on counterpoint and 'gotta be complex'.  Gross.  I'll try another of his.  It was a rather boring experience and his music just mostly seemed like 'anything else' out there.  No special anything.  Yeah...

Maybe it is actually about this one ( a two CD extract from the integral)

and they confused the releases.

I have that CD set and it is certainly a possibility that they have confused the full set with a release of a subset of the full cycle.   I view this purchase like a lottery ticket and it will take some time to find out if it is a winner.

Just got an e-mail notice from Zoverstocks saying the item could not be sent because it failed its quality inspection.  I suspect that the failure was due to it being the wrong item.  Oh well, order was canceled so nothing lost.   :P

Got more chamber music today (I've gone off orchestral completely it seems!).

Ives - Piano Trio, Violin Sonatas 2 & 4, selection of songs - never heard these chamber works.

Schubert - String Quartets 14 & 15 - I know these well, but I didn't have the 15th quartet on disc.

Well I don't you've completely dropped orchestral music, but rather you're listening to music you enjoy more right now. Nothing wrong with that.

Well, to tell you the truth, I haven't gone off orchestral completely - probably only in terms of buying stuff. Today, I borrowed Suk's Asrael Symphony from the library. The Ondine disc conducted by Ashkenazy. Listened to half of it before coming to work today. I liked how, although Suk was dealing with much personal grief, the music doesn't sound self-indulgent or too bombastic. It's quite restrained in many ways. I like how he pulls the violin out of the body of the orchestra for some very searching & affecting solos. I understand he was a violinist. This is a work you have raved about in the past & I look forward to hearing it in full during the week when I have more time...

The new erato

I guess half of my buying is vocal (including 20th century + baroque opera, church music and lieder), of the remaining half solo piano, chamber and orchestral takes ever honour, with a slight preference for chamber).

From Hyperions please buy me:
