Picked this up in a store today for $7.99. Surprised to actually have found this in a store (a B&N):

I eventually caved in and bought:

Hendrik Andriessen - Miroir de Peine [orchestral music]
Hendrik Andriessen - Violinkonzert
Rudolf Escher - Konzert f. Streichorchester
Rudolf Escher - Le Tombeau de Ravel [chamber music]
Julius Röntgen - Klaviertrio op. 50
Julius Röntgen - Serenade f. 7 Bläser op. 14
Jan van Gilse - Nonet

All on NM Classics.

This sounds interesting - admittedly partly because I hope someone writes "Le Tombeau de Escher" in order to continue the infinite loop of tombeaus until a new Couperin emerges...

(but also because I'm always intrigued by the idea of music inspired by Ravel)

Hehe that would be awesome! I am intrigued as to "which" Escher I will get, as he had several phases. I looked up the work and it has a mid-late date, so could be serial - which would be an especially neat way to re-cast Ravel.

First off, my Shostakovich order from CDImports landed today--the Haitink box set of the complete symphonies and 2 CD from Gergiev/Mariinsky, Symphonies 2& 11 and 3 & 10.  Then dropped into Barnes and Nobles b&m store and--well, what do you know, how did these four end up back home with me :o ;D

The Cimerosa was bought on blind speculation; apparently it's one of a series of radio broadcasts from the late 60s; this is (going by what I found on Amazon when I got home) its second issue on CD.  It's actually a rather short 2 act comic opera, total running time is a little under 90 minutes.

I know, I've listened to it many times checking it out at the library.  I'm still going to purchase the Petrenko/RLPO/Naxos releases, as most of those have been great.

The only 10th I've heard other than Petrenko's that I like just as much is Ormandy/Philadelphia Orchestra.

I've really enjoyed Petrenko's cycle so far. Very good audio and performances from the RLPO. I haven't heard Ormandy's recording of the 10th, but, then again, I'm not an admirer of Ormandy's conducting in general.

Ordered the entire Igor Markevitch cycle on Naxos (originally on Marco Polo):

Good to know!  I've got half of those on the Marco Polo imprint . . . would not take a lot of pushing for me to seek out the rest.

Say, Ray, have you heard the Jansons/Phila recording? Or (while I need to revisit it myself) the Ančerl/Cz Phil?

;D At least you helped me consolidate a new policy of mine: no more buying cheap stuff (and boxes) for the sake of cheapness - I now try to pick up music on smaller labels that usually go for full price, as it tends to make me value the production more.

Ugh. 20th century symphonist. All the symphonies have fancy titles. They're almost shouting at me to buy them.

Interested in what you make of the Tournemire 7th - it's either zen or patience-testing.
