The apperception of the role of context . . . it's an art, isn't it?

It could very well be, Karl. My sarcasm, in many cases, translates to mean-spiritedness, but I'm just trying to make a joke. It's like a saying I heard "A thousand comedians out of work and here I am trying to be one." :)

Graciously conceded.

Good to hear, Greg. I have Stravinsky's performance of it but it has been years since I heard it. It will be good to have another version of it. I remember enjoying this work very much. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't this Stravinsky's last Neoclassical work? I could be wrong of course.

I don't know about last, but definitely neoclassical , which is where I find Stravinsky to be at his best.

I happen to like all of Stravinsky stylistic developments. I don't put one phase over another. All of them have given me so much happiness and joy.

No, John, listen to me, I know when he's at his best.

IIRC The Rake's Progress was the last completely neoclassical piece.  Next he embarked on ΑΓΩΗ, which wound up being a stylistic straddler.  Great on its own terms, to be sure.

I couldn't resist this for $6 on E-Bay:

Found this in the used CD bin at the one and only CD store in the local mall for $4.99

And, towards the other end of the cost spectrum,  I pre-ordered the Teldec Complete Bach Box from ImportCDs. (h/t MCUrkneal).   For those considering this one, they have at $259 plus s/h through 30 March.

Ironically, my main listening tonight is Alan Curtis playing the English and French Suites--a performance that is part of the Teldec box.

Quote from: Bulldog on March 22, 2012, 09:46:55 AMConsidering other Bach comments you have made, I think it's only half-joking.  Overall, you're a much more pleasant and insightful GMG member when you stick to praising your preferred composers.  When it comes to Bach, you are clueless.
Quote from: karlhenning on March 22, 2012, 10:32:39 AMAs I indicated in my post (which you strangely misread as a matter of my "taking offense") I thought right away of there being new members this week.  Maybe they both like Bach (Bach write a lot of great music, which has given many people in the world joy for hundreds of years, it's not a stretch to imagine so).  Your post makes you look very poorly.  I am surprised that you still don't twig that.
I'd call this an overreaction to an innocuous comment.

I should have learned my lesson quite some time ago. There are composers you simply don't poke fun of without getting a tongue lashing from the "veteran" members and those are Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. You must also remember, it's certainly okay for everybody else to poke fun of the composers that I admire.

By the way, some nice recordings you picked up. I meant to make a comment, but I think you'll enjoy that Vine set. I'm not sure if you know his music very well, but I've been a follower of his music ever since I heard that set of symphonies, which is sadly out-of-date now as he's already composed a 7th symphony.

Pfffffffffffffft Bach, what a hack :D

I did think of you when I saw that Vine set! So far it's quite enjoyable, but he is obviously influenced by Stravinsky, of whose style I am not the greatest fan. Interesting that it was recorded at the Sydney Town Hall, not the Opera House. The sound is slightly reverberant for my taste. I noted that they got in Tim Handley to produce the later symphonies, so look forward to seeing hearing how he handles the sound of the hall.
