No love for me picking up some of the Fischer/Austro Hungarian? Geez. Who do I need to...never mind.

I'm surprised you didn't own this one already, Karl.

Marvin being a greenhorn Haydnisto needs all the encouragement he can get. You, on the other hand, are a long-time convert. Right? ;)

Yes, I was just kidding. I actually have some other Fischer recordings, went the route of the smaller sets and single discs, they are great performances.
But yes, Marvin, great purchase!  :)

I am so sorry....didn't mean to steal your thunder. Please forgive  0:).  Sarge refered me to amazon.de where the whole Fischer Haydn symphony cycle is on offer for under £40 INCLUDING shipping.  If you need to fill in gaps it might prove more economical to buy the whole set. Just a suggestion.

It is true I needed all the encouragement I could get to finally buy that set. It will take me a few months to get through all 104 symphonies.

If it only takes you a few months, you're a better man than me, Gunga Brown  ;D  I've been at it 40+ years and I still have a few to go.

Friend, no need to apologize, I really was kidding. But you're right, I should have just purchased the whole Fischer set.
When you get to #98 let me know. Thats my favorite of the "London" symphonies and Fischer's performance to me is more Romantic than Classical, and I think it works brilliantly.

Cheers, Marvin!

Some Haydn symphonies performed by Fischer/Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra. The 1-20 set fills in some gaps and almost gives me at least one recording of every symphony.

You and Marvin have inspired me to move ahead with completing my Haydn symphony collection. I just ordered the Goodman/Hanover CD with the 18th; the Naxos disc with 62 (Mallon, Toronto Chamber); and the Fischer box which has 27 and 32.

The box,  new, from a German Amazon seller, was offered for 15 Euro. I'm just missing 10 and 11 now.

I haven't heard any of Fischer's Haydn so I'm looking forward to this. Most of the versions I have of 21-39 are HIP. Will be nice to hear a modern take.

I've really only heard their performances for later symphonies, mostly the Londons, and they definitely have the sound of a big ensemble, but still with some delicately played Adagios. I just mentioned to Marvin that Fischer's #98 is my favorite performance of that symphony, the second movement Adagio is Bruckner-esque. Spins on my CD player about once a week.

Hmm... an (understandably) widely held opinion is that Fischer is at his very weakest in the late symphonies (recorded first) -- and really hits his stride in the middle and early stuff. Which I vaguely agree with.

Considering I'm going backwards in #s with Fischer maybe I'll see that stride.

I just ordered his #1-20 and a 2-fer with #45 & #48 included, have yet to hear them.

Yes, that seems to be the general verdict. But I'm intrigued by Greg's description. I'm not at all allergic to Big Band Haydn, especially in the Londons. Nor allergic to a more romantic approach. Maybe I should have ordered the big box. If I were 20 years, or even 10 years younger, I would have  :D

Competition is so vast, among the late symphonies, even/especially for good big-band style...
I still think rather highly of the Jochum set, for that matter.

Thread duty:

Listen what the Cat Dragged In

R. Strauss
Der Bürger als Edelmann (Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme)
complete opera/musical comedy
K.A.Rickenbacher / MKO / P.Ustinov
Koch-Schwann 2CDs

Rarity in its complete (or any) form. Absurd prices on Amazon.com, but cheap-cheap at Amazon.de

R. Schumann
Symphonies 2 & 4
H.Vonk, K.Tennstedt / Cologne RSO, Berlin Ph
EMI Red Line

Since Tennstedt's Schumann Fourth was my favorite (among the final contenders) in a recent GMG-instigated blind listening test, I wanted both his Schumann-Berlin recordings. On EMI Red Line they're coupled with Vonk's 1st and 2nd, respectively, to form a cycle. Other EMI re-issues of a cheap Schumann-Symphony cycles use all-Vonk. OK price on German Amazon (link above), dirt cheap from the UK (link here)
