Willoughby earl of Itacarius

8 CD'S for 14,99 euro's looks like a good deal. I love the recordings they made over the years, but most of them where OOP, so I took the plunge!

Regular readers here shouldn't be amazed that I do buy the occasional CD.

Well, I wasn't amazed by the fact that you bought CDs, but by that particular set itself, I didn't hear about it before.

It looks wonderful, the performers are extremely fine.

My concern was, that there would not be duplication of the (fine, fine, superfine, per Sarge's report) recording of The Planets, in the box here (which I have now re-discovered!):

It looks as if this Boult/The Planets is distinct (London Philharmonic vs. New Philharmonia), which pleases me well.  Looks as if the Previn/LSO recordings of The Perfect Fool and Egdon Heath will de duplicates, but that is an acceptable degree of redundancy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't remember in which stack or on which shelf I put it.

I'm happy to be here for you, buddy!

Even more delighted to report that I have laid hands again upon it at last (per above).

Of course, it is yet more . . . complicated.

There is also duplication with the Psalm 86 and Choral Fantasia in the British Composers box.  And I have an earlier singleton of The Hymn of Jesus and the Choral Symphony which looks like redundancy (though even on that disc in the new box, there is an additional Short Festival Te Deum). All in all, the new box still strikes me as good value added at the price point.

Just landed:

Back when this was a new release, I heard them here in Boston on their tour.  I was not sure then (nor am I sure just now) that I buy the premise (or, how much of the premise I might buy), but it was an electrifying musical event.  So, all this time, I suppose I have been waiting for a nicely discounted copy to cross my path. And now, it has.

The Fourth is way up in my list of well- (not to say intensely-) loved Shostakovich symphonies.  I had read of the Russian Funeral Music in a Britten bio, long ago; was immediately curious to hear the work . . . and it fell off my radar.  So when recent discussion here brought this recording to my attention, made by Rattle back when (to judge by other recordings of the time) I consider him solidly in The Zone, my interest was immediate and keen.

One of many pieces in which I have found what had been a long but casual interest, fanned into a roaring flame by discussion here at GMG, the Fantasia contrappuntistica has become a happy obsession with me; thus have I taken the plunge with the two-piano version.
