Well, there are quite a few excellent accounts of the piece, that's for sure.

And of those you're fetching in now, the Fricsay interests me strangely, I allow.

The Fricsay got good reviews, but the audio samples sounded great. I'll have to compile a list of Le sacre recordings I own. I'm pretty sure I own at least 30, but I'll get back here with the list momentarily.

Leon

For sure, I do like the piece, Le Sacre, but I do not catch myself listening to it much anymore.  When I listen to Stravinsky, these days, I opt for other works.

It's some little while since I've listened to it, myself . . . .

I'm relaxed, my friend. :) I deleted my reply to you because I thought it was rude of me, so in respect to your feelings, I understand you want me to hear Aho and you're enthusiastic about him, but those BIS recordings aren't cheap. What recording would you recommend I start with?

It's certainly true that BIS isn't cheap.

These two excellent works are conveniently uploaded to Youtube:

I've got the Abbado recording too, it's absolutely gorgeous; one of the best versions of Le sacre du printemps I've ever heard. :)

Karl Henning

That's something.

There won't be that many recordings of Henning's music, until he's dead.

Maybe, long dead.

Perhaps I should have put there a smiley, after all  :P

This is why I pestered you - I knew you'd be all over Aho.

The Symphonic Dances is based on Uuno Klami's unfinished ballet Pyörteitä (Whirls), for which Aho has made a completion (I was at the premiere, as was Aho). Aho uses Klami's Kalevala suite's themes in the work. The piece is thus more in the late romantic / nationalist vein, but good stuff, anyway.

Yes, I eat this stuff for breakfast. ;D I'm pretty familiar with Klami's music and the Kalevala Suite in particular which was on an Ondine recording I bought a year or so ago. Yes, this is certainly good music that needs wider exposure.

I think the rule is you gotta move to Finland first, then the labels might record you.

Thanks, yes, I did pass on this recording (for now) as well as some of the later BIS recordings (like the one with Symphony No. 13) and the recording with the Clarinet Concerto. I do plan on getting these at some juncture.
