Howdy! Brian reported accurately that right up among my favorite Tenths, is Jansons. Also in the august company for the marvelous Op.93 are: Ancerl, Shostakovich fils ... and I need to give ear again to Brian's well-liked Petrenko.

@KH, Thanks. I too am very partial to Petrenko's readings of Shostakovich; I keep hoping that he will soon come out with a complete cycle, whichI would definitely acquire ASAP!

There were 3 or 4 symphonies left for Petrenko to record, notably Nos 4 and 7, when he began negotiating an exclusive contract with EMI; I haven't heard any news since, but I would assume Naxos found a way to finish recording that series before the EMI exclusive deal began.

Well, and it won't surprise you, Brian, that I am waiting keenly for the Fourth and for the Leningrad.

Yes, he has the 4th, 7th, 13th, and 14th to go.

I wonder what will round out the 14th CD. There hasn't been any non-symphonic filler so far, as far as I know.

Good question. I don't know what could possibly be coupled with the 14th.

And from Daniel's earlier comment about Elder/Halle, I've really come to appreciate that series, only own three of them right now (both symphonies and Music Makers disc) and they are very passionate.

The Elder/Halle Dream of Gerontius is first class.

You might want also to get the boxed up set of miscellaneous British orchestral works.

A song cycle, a la the Haitink set ????

The "Spring Fire" CD is delicious.

Possibly or maybe some short miscellaneous works like Novorossiysk Chimes, Theme and Variations, Overture on Russian and Khirghiz Folk Themes, or Festive Overture. Who knows really. We might not even see a completed cycle.

Or something that would contrast well, like Festive Overture.

A couple of late-Romantic giants arrived today: Solti's first Mahler Third (with the LSO) and Boulez's Gurre-Lieder, recommended by Cato.

I've had the reissue box for a while ... but have I listened yet to that Boulez Gurre-lieder?

It demands some investment in time so I'm not surprised you might not have tackled it yet.

Here's your custom-tailored rationalization / wife-answer service:

"...oh, no honey, it's not because karlhenning that I got this 8th set of the Gurrelieder. Noooo, m'am! This is one of the essential recordings of Evelyn Lear who, as you know, just died. It's to celebrate her art and memory."

Well, and it may likely be that I've not heard the piece since the Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson quasi-memorial performance at Tanglewood.

Sure is a piece I like very well.

Solti's expression as I see it: Yet another version, Rock?
