Just bought:

I had bought this before, but the seller canceled the order. Hopefully, this one will come. I've been really wanting to hear Osborne's performances.

I've got this one; very nice.
I have Volume 2 in the series, haven't given it a listen recently, but I recall liking it.  I want to get familiar with Shostakovich's songs other than the "Suite on words of Michelangelo"

Having had some time for digestion, what do you think of Norrington's Mahler?

I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard of his M1 on Daniel's comparison thread. (Naturally it was rejected in the first round!) Thanks to Mog, I was able to hear the whole thing. I liked the Blumine included as the second movement with the scherzo following. Norrington's Ländler is terrific--made me get up and dance--and his final movement is just as infectiously energetic.

I may be having a hard time justifying $20 or $30 for Rattle or Tennstedt's complete cycles, but scarcely hesitated to click "buy" for Norrington's M1 alone. ;)

Has it really been thirteen months since I got those?
To tell the truth, I haven't listened to those recordings very much,  but I remember being positive about them, with the exception of the Second,  which hit me as being the worst performance of that symphony I've ever heard, bad on most counts.  Given that M2 is possibly my favorite symphony, and I'm usually delighted by any performance of it that I hear,  this is so untypical a reaction for me that I have to accept I was simply having a bad ear day when I listened to it--but I've never worked a re-listen into the schedule.

At any rate, other than M2,  I feel comfortable suggesting his recordings of Mahler and Bruckner to anyone who isn't David Hurwitz.

Spent too much money on music today:

This is an excellent set IMO.  Unfortunately, I have yet to be able to complete listening to the set ...

I passed by Sikoras on the way home form a doctor's appointment and bought this from the pre-owned cds:
Looked through the used LP section but no copy of the Hummel Mass that André covets.

Thanks, John!
I'm overdue for some Milhaud. I'm familiar with his more well-known works (La Creation Du Monde and Le Boeuf Sur Le Toit among them) but have been in need of exploring more.

You should seriously try these two sets:

These are essential acquisitions for the Milhaud fan IMHO. Enjoy!

If only Gurn were sure enough of his convictions to take a definitive stand on this recording's merits....I bought it anyway. ;) 8)

It wasn't Gurn who convinced me so much as Opus:

....And the measured finale had a sense of dance to it, that I could almost imagine all the "brooder" holding hands and dancing :D, and which was unlike the mad rush to the finish that I usually hear.

"measured finale" and no "mad rush to the finish" ...sold! It arrived this morning:

Heh, I worry about that occasionally. It can be too easy to push Sarge's buttons.

e.g.
Hey Sarge, I feel really weird being the only person here who likes Antoni Wit's Brahms choral album. Apparently it's too eccentrically slow and rich and old-fashioned for people and hasn't caught on. Alto Rhapsody is 14:51 vs. 11:46 Baker/Boult, 12:28 Ludwig/Klemperer. But the skeptics can eat it. Something something Celibidachean tonal warmth.

I might liker it. Some of my favorites are on the slow side, e.g., Sinopoli/Czech Phil 14:28 and Eschenbach/Houston 13:54.

Just bought:

It was really cheap ($5) and if anything I'll have another performance of The Miraculous Mandarin. I've read this is a good one.

What can I say? I've caught a little of the Berlioz bug going around, so I bought these:

From Amazon.co.uk... (I blame the SDCB thread and its discussion on Schubert which got me looking at Alpha Productions CDs again)
