Discussion with Brian on the Best Recordings of 2012 led to an Amazon search that made me realize that I don't have every recording by the Jerusalem Quartet.  This, fortunately, was a problem that only needed 36USD to fix.

I have absolutely nothing by Diepenbrock, but he sounds like a composer I'll like.
Nor any of Celi.,  so I figured it's time to find out what life in the extremely slow lane is like.

I want to hear more about the Diepenbrock, when you've had time to ingest it.  As for the Celi, I was warned away from it, and it's some of my favorite Bruckner hands-down, maybe even the desert-isle product I would grad and run with, if there wasn't time to mix and match.  Come to think of it, I was also warned away from Celi's other monstrosities (his Munich Brahms, his Munich Beethoven, his Tchaikovsky), and I find every one of these performances really interesting, if not an outright keeper.  I regret none of these acquistions.  He is a lion.  [Cf. those recent "Symphonies" and "French & Russian Music" boxes from EMI]

Also really keen to check out that Sony DVD set of Celi's Bruckner, with an allegedly earthstopping #4 on two cds (included on cds rather than as video, and only in that box, go figure).

I have received conflicting counsel from trusted and respected sources, concerning the following.

[asin]B001D94LGG[/asin]
Handel: BELSHAZZAR/JEPHTHA [Harnoncourt/CMW - Warner, 6cd]

But I decided to buy the shit out it.  Apropos Celibidache, it is interesting how divisive Harnoncourt can be; the reasons for this seem to come from rather opposite places, but the agreement about the disagreeability of them seems to be their bloodymindedness, or "ugliness" if you prefer.  Things "not working" as they should.

Very nice, Greg. I need to revisit this recording. I remember enjoying it.

Good to hear, Karl and John. I'm a phantasy and SQ fan from RVW, not familiar with the rest of the lot.

Also just made my choice on new RVW set.

A great set and one that I need to return to myself. I HATED the performance of The Lark Ascending with Sarah Chang, but this is rather insignificant since this work has been recorded so many times and I've got several great performances of it. The fillers are interesting ones like In the Fen Country and On Wenlock Edge (I believe Ian Bostridge sings on this work), but these make the set even more attractive and worthwhile. Hope you enjoy it and look forward to your impressions of it.

Thanks for the response, John. I was able to hear Haitink's 5th and 6th and really enjoyed them. I've read much about Boult and Handley's similarities, although this may not be completely accurate, I felt a nice contrast of Haitink, Boult and Slatkin would do me better.

Sarge, Bogey and yours truly are also in the small-but-select club of enthusiasts for that Haitink box, Greg.

No problem. I understand what you mean about contrasts. Let's not forget about what I consider the 'holy grail of RVW symphony sets': the Thomson. What differentiates Thomson from most of the pack is his aggression and Modernist twists on the music. In the more terse symphonies: the 4th and 6th respectively, he really gives the music an acidic tongue lashing, but his interpretations are consistent throughout. I understand the price put you off, but if you're looking for a final RVW symphony set. Let it be this one. :)

I do have some of Thomson's, and aggressive is a good adjective. I do like them, more for nos. 4 and 9, but a little less for 3 and 5. But a solid set none the less.

You may be waiting a while;  I have a considerable amount of stuff already waiting for first listens.  Probably enough that I could make no further purchases this year, and still be giving stuff a first listen next Christmastide....

But hopefully I'll remember your interest by the time this gets to my CD player.

Visited the used CD shop today, and found
--Liszt--Hungarian Rhapsodies, Budapest Festival Orch./I. Fischer cond.
--Haydn--Symphonies 22, 63 and 80  Orpheus Chamber Orchestra
--Brahms--Violin Sonatas/Perlman and Barenboim (after a discussion yesterday with Chambernut on the WAYLT thread)
--a mono recording by Artur Rubinstein of various pieces by Liszt and Anton Rubinstein
--Mendelssohn--String Quartets/Ysaye Quartet

I personally liked Thomson's approach to the more pastoral symphonies, but I just think highly all-around of the performances. If I recall, Haitink did fine in the 3rd. I'm going to re-listen to that one tonight.

Some of Brian's recent listening on NML of Englund's music prompted me to have a listen myself and, as a result, here's what I bought:

Tempting - I placed these two in the shopping cart some hours ago. Not that I'm buying anything soon - unless prices on the items in the cart (there are others, too) drop dramatically.

Mine were $11 each, which isn't too bad considering that Ondine isn't exactly a cheap label. The other Englund recordings on this label sure do look tempting now, but I'm just going wait.
