The Wranitzky was a enormous let down Dave. Swimming sound, and devoid of any infectious charm.

Hi Harry - well, the disc was cheap & I was 'taking a chance' to help w/ the shipping, so I'll wait for a listen - unfortunately, I could not find a review of this recording which is against my usual criteria when purchasing a CD(s), i.e. would like to see one or several excellent comments.

BUT, I have 2 CDs of symphonies & also the disc below of chamber works (w/ the 2 brothers) which I really enjoy; yes, different group performing but was hoping for a pleasant surprise - time will tell - thanks for your thoughts - Dave :)

All from amazon spain.  All of them at very good prices.

I have heard a lot of criticism of this box, which I also own.  I think the criticism was not well-justified ...

Let's hope so, I've heard more positive things generally, but with any box you take the rough with the smooth.  For about 10 euro it can't be bad!

If I remember well I wrote quite a damning review about that one. (The Brilliant recording) But no matter its cheap, and the historic surroundings are a bonus in which it is recorded.

That recording is "the berries", Greg.

Had just listened to the first movement of Kleiber's "Unfinished" on Spotify and purchased immediately.
And, I do like me some berries.

Im a bit of a cheapskate and dont often buy full-price Discs but this one I had to have :) :
Edit: Bought the Rachmaninov set too

At least one of these, possibly both, come via rec's from the lovely and talented Brian. Working my way through them now;

The Türk is quite interesting Classical Era keyboard music on some really nice authentic keyboards. The Lawson / Revolutionary Drawing Room is some rarely heard fragments which I have by the Netherlands Wind Ensemble on modern instruments, but here are played by some of the finest period musicians around, and the fragments are completed so they don't just stop mid-bar. In some cases, the completion consists or a bar for the turn and a repeat. The lovely Quintet is as good as any I've heard.  :)

Probably too late in the final flush of stockpiling to be giving in to impulse buying, but all of these have been longstanding interests; the fatal nudge was running across good deals on them.  A little bit more discipline for the next and final batch of purchases, then it's hibernation.  Or maybe even description of actual listening.

(Hat-tip Scarpia and others.  The earlier, mono cycle; not the stereo one, which was the one included in that big Kempff/DG solo box.  I got the DG edition mono cycle because of multiple reports about the sound and presentation being notably superior to the Regis bargain reissue; also lucked out and got it for about the price of the Regis.  Looks like a Kempff/DG concertos box is on its way in a month or so.)

Hat-tip MI.  I so enjoyed the morsel of Abbado's Debussy (w/BSO, a DG Originals reissue from late last year), I needed to hear more.

[asin]B000001GN4[/asin]
chopped and screwed, as we say in the Dirty South; DJ Slo-Böhm w/Fassbaender, Domingo, Walter Berry, Jessye Norman; apparently this one is not universally loved, but I heard an mp3 of the first movement and I needed it.

It was really a toss-up between this and the Harnoncourt, but since I'm going to own both eventually anyway, I went with the deal.  I don't know this music well, but I loved these recordings when I heard them about a year or so ago.  I think in 2013 I will also explore Dvorak by Talich and Neumann as well.

[asin]B000AL8ZEW[/asin]
There's also another volume with Kirkby/Hogwood/AAM called ITALIAN CANTATAS + THE ALCHYMIST (Decca/L'Oiseau Lyre), which at a glance seems to be a completely distinct program; I'm going to wait on that one be available reasonably, instead of as a top-dollar Arkiv CDR, as it currently is.

You won't regret these. Not even a little. Kubelik is a natural with the Dvorak. And Kempff has a surefooted way with the Beethoven. He is not always my favorite, but he clearly has a good understanding of the music. Enjoy!
Be kind to your fellow posters!!

Thanks MCU, I believe you.  Contrary to appearances, I don't have a lot of money to burn, so even with the advantage of services like Spotify, it's hard to know what a recording will be like past the first audition.  I'm glad these have worn well for you, I am sure that makes the investment a lucky one.

....and add this to the list of ones that you will not regret.  Singing at its best....a beautiful disc.

Thanks, Bogey.  I actually got motivated enough to ask for some Emma Kirkby recommendations in her thread over the vocalists subforum.

One more item, just because I'd run across mention of it at least a few times recently.  Hat-tip Luke and others.  I will probably want to seek out some other recordings of L'ENFANT, at least; but the samples I heard from this sounded grand.  I see that the two major Ravel works here are the same recordings included in that big Ravel/Decca box set; though I really wanted the non-Ravel filler here, and I think I own too much and want too little of that big Ravel box's contents to actually buy the thing.

That's a great set, I guess you mean Ansermet by other recordings? I don't have that, but have heard it from Spotify or Youtube - very nice indeed. And the songs with Danco I do own - superb performances.

This set will be available on Amazon US for $24.99 on 2/5 as well, though I think those MarketPlace sellers will probably offer even better price ...
