Had enough money left over from Christmas to allow myself this impulse purchase. I call Pärt one of my favourite and most inspiring living composers, so I should definitely start getting more of his music into my collection! These pieces are all wonderful as well. :)

Excellent, Daniel. You can't ever go wrong with Cantus in Memoriam of Benjamin Britten or Tabula Rasa. :) I would, however, look into the ECM recordings. Those are quite special recordings as many of them had involvement from Part himself.

Good stuff. John is right, the ECM discs are special. Outside of ECM there is a very nice disc by Paul Hillier and Hilliard Ensemble on HMundi. Features my favorite performance of Part's best work, De Profundis (Psalm 129)

I knew a guy who had a nakamichi tape deck in his car...  It was probably worth more than the car was..

I bought a Nakamichi Dragon in 1983 (still have it). The list price was $2400 (in today's dollars, around $6000). I didn't pay that much though. Being in the military, I had access to the Air Force audio club near Bitburg air base. They had one on sale for $1500--still a fortune for a relatively poor Army noncom, but Mrs. Rock was cool about it. So yeah, I can believe your friend's deck was worth more than the car  ;D Left click to enlarge pics:

Thanks for the recommendations, John and Greg! I shall definitely hope to get these at some point, Part is a composer who I want a far bigger part in my collection. ;)

Europe only, so far.
Guido's Four Seasons have had one other outing, on CPO in 2004... where I missed it or ignored it... it's played like the dickens (judging by clips) but it is also most severely abridged.

The first time I have really dug a Barenboim Bruckner performance; some of the brashness of his Chicago account is still in his Fourth, but it sounds much less self-serving. Strangely, the orchestra--except for a gaggle of delighted (accident-free) horns--looks afterwards as if they had just returned from a funeral. (Then again, maybe that's the German facial expression for happy-fun-time.)

Sarge

I think he meant "above" as in: above where the picture ends. Which makes the comment even funnier (funniest I've read in a long time here) -- with the suggestion that from the H&K Amp via CD Player via Tape Deck via turn table you're working your way backwards in time, and hard!

+1
The ECM disc with Cantus, Fratres and Tabula Rasa I got recently is superb. Considering the line-up, which includes e.g. Gidon Kremer, Alfred Schnittke, and Keith Jarrett, it shouldn't be surprising.
In any case, enjoy the music - and I'm pretty sure that the EMI performances are quite good, too.

The first 8 were in two box sets (below) that I loved. They were the first sets I ever bought for a singer and not a composer. What's more, I was going only on reputation at the time, having never heard Christoff sing. Imagine buying 8 discs with not a clue if you liked the person who sang every note!!These sets still get regular listens, so he must have done something right! Does it come with a libretto? I assume not, but most songs can probably be found online. Mine have fallen apart from overuse!

To sum up: I don't think you will be disappointed...

Sarge, what I want to know is:  What is that book?  There is one, whose title looks like 'MOO'.  ;D

Hey Sarge, my Dad owns a Nakamichi cassette tape deck as well. I believe this is the one he owns:

kishnevi

While the rest of you discuss Japanese tape decks and the other contents of Sarge's shelves,
I was doing thread duty:

First from Prestoclassical

But before I did, I did some price comparison with Amazon(US)MP, and got these two there, instead of tacking them onto the Prestoclassical order as I had originally planned on doing.  (Prices are actually pretty close, but this allowed me to tell myself I was only spending a hundred dollars at Presto.)

Jeffrey, that Skrowaczewski Shosty 10 is a pretty darn good one.

I just did my duty too, and also at Presto. These two two-CD sets, both of which comprise 100% music I do not currently possess:

[asin]B00008GFOH[/asin]

[asin]B000H0MH36[/asin]

I see one of these is being sold new on Amazon Marketplace for $0.70 by "bargainbookstores." Not sure I trust that listing. Anybody dealt with CDs from "bargainbookstores" before?

Brian

I decided to be the guinea pig and find out what happens if I order this new for $1.36 from "bargainbookstores."

Accentus are excellent, but I hope you did not pay too much - those can be found in a 4-disc set relatively inexpensive (along with a good Faure Requiem).

All three four great discs, Brian. I really enjoy the Accentus Transcriptions, their rendition of Schubert's Grablied (after Der Tod und das Mädchen) is beautiful, and I've been digging into North slowly, but some very good discoveries for sure.

Also, their Haydn Seven Words with Akademie für Alte Musik, Berlin is tops.
