Pekiel is the most important of the early-mid Polish baroque composers and I've recently been listening to his Missa Pulcherrima ad instar Praenestini with organ doubling. It's among the latest examples of modal polyphonic style, the only other example I know of from as late as the 1660s being by a figure of the name of D'Helffer. It's not as interesting as say Montiverdi's remarkable modal-tonal crossover mass Missa In illo tempore but has a refinement a little reminiscent of Byrd's latin masses. Kind-of interesting in charting the rise of tonality.

The Polish baroque is not getting much love on GMG, is it?

I love the Missa Pulcherrima (the only Pękiel composition that I know, actually) but have never listened to it in your "academic" ("contextually informed"?) way. Apparently in this case it sort of takes away from the pleasure a bit so I'm better off anyway... ;D
