I know this is not a computer forum, but there are very knowledgeable people here and I don't have to register again on another forum.

Could someone tell me what an ethernet driver is and where exactly you get them from?

Sorry what I mean is, does it have to do with the modem? Or is it some part of the pc which doesnt have a driver like the ethernet card?

Ethernet Driver:  Software to enable functionality of your Ethernet port on your computer, into which you attatch an ethernet cable which runs into your router (your 'internet modem') to access the internet or other networks.  You can look up the driver you need at www.driverguide.com .

I'm A+ certified and Microsoft Certified Professional so hopefully I know what I'm talking about.

The ethernet card is located on your PC probably beside the telephone modem socket.  The drivers are probably for your PC based Ehernet card which these days are built in to the computer rather than being a seperate 'card'.

Thank you John! My brother has has been having problems with the internet, and it always goes much slower when his is on. I hope this will fix the problem! :)

And I am confused :) Isn't your name Mark?

John is just Mark without the face pimple.

Is your brother running his modem through a USB port? If so this would probably be slower. As John says, the ethernet port is located on the back of your PC next to the telephone line input (you can see exactly the same setup on the back of your modem). It will not take a telephone plug securely as it is a bit bigger. When a modem is connected to the ethernet port, the port will emit a small flashing/pulsing light (mine's yellow).

Ethernet is the preferred way to connect a modem to the PC and is a lot faster than using a USB port. Having said that, if your ethernet card is not working/enabled then the USB port is another way of connecting.

Yes he connects by USB but, I've realized this is not the problem with the slow internet. When his computer turns on my internet gets significantly slower (I am wireless) and his computer freaks out entirely. So I guess its some probably with the modem? Because it only happens when both computers are on.

It sounds as though the modem has a very inefficient USB interface or your brothers computer and Modem are having trouble establishing USB connection, and this is tying up your modem, distracting it from the other task of communicating with your computer.  Connecting to the modem through ethernet or a wireless adapter that plugs into a USB port would be advisable.

Thanks guys! I was able to get the ethernet working instead of the USB. For one thing the computer's fan seems quieter and I hope the internet will work fine. Thank you again GMGers.

Quieter fan means the CPU is less active.  It suggests that the USB interface is too crude to generate an "interrupt" when it has something to process, requiring the computer to constantly check the USB port to see if data is available.  The ethernet is optimized for network communication and probably has the ability to send the CPU an interrupt signal when communication is required.
