I ordered the sole copy on sale today from amazon in the UK -- from a vendor. But I noticed that it is available in MP3 through e music.

And this was really on Hungaroton, not Supraphon? Which ASIN no. did the copy have?

Oh shit!

Despite the expletive above,  I can conform that Palenicek's CD on Supraphon is very much to my taste.

A dry acoustic (contrast the relatively reverberent acoustic of Firkusny on DG). An exciting, spontaneous sounding interpretation (by comparison Firkusny sounds very mellow)

I love it.

I found this on Youtube

If you start at #1 of the Overgrown Path the next option pops up automatically. This has really caught my attention as great playing of this work and all I wonder is how it compares against Firkusny.

The set by Austbo was recently recommended to me by Jens, but I have yet to pick it up.
I just ordered the Piano Sonata.  I'm quite familiar with J's orchestral works but am not familiar with the Sonata.  Do you have any opinion concerning it? I ordered it on a gamble.

I only have this one (The DG):

Rudolf Firkusny is the first choice in Janacek, the DG set first and the RCA set second.  Accept no substitutes.

It didn't knock me out on first listen. I'll try to check it out again soon and report back.

If I'm not mistaken it's only available on LP - and I used to have it!!

But lost it to a misguided cull... :'(

Nice try, but you don't get the champagne.

It has to be a Cd for sale at a reasonable price or a functioning link to a download.

And the first is only by one of Moravec's pupils, I think.

But here is a consolation prize for your effort.

Sorry, it was late night when I found that, and was too tired to read the entry completely.
And since I have a history of gout, don't send....

Oh my. I'm (dimly) recalling the album cover now (wasn't it on Nonesuch in the US?), and since I've been in the habit of picking up EVERYTHING done by Moravec that crosses my path, I'd swear I still have it...though probably in a box in storage.

Of course, mine would be LP, too, so no Krug for Dirk.

Alas...

Well, thought that I'll join this thread - currently own the Brilliant 2-CD box w/ Håkon Austbø - good reviews & certainly a great price! I enjoy these recordings but am willing to listen - does he approach the other suggestions here?  Is he so inferior that even the price is not worth a consideration?  Just wondering since I've really not heard these other discs, so would enjoy some comparison comments on what I own vs. what is be recommended here as the 'top dog' recordings - thanks -  ;) :D   Dave

Thanks, dirk - forgot to mention that. Yes, it's on Nonesuch.

Here's a pic I found:

Listened to Janacek's Overgrown Path for the first time, and I'm sorry to say it did nothing for me.  I was listening to Paul Crossley's recording on Decca, and after listening to the thing through three times, it seems capricious without being compelling.  Perhaps this is the sort of music that grows on you over time, or perhaps I need to hear a different performance.  (I also have a copy of Schiff's recording, which I have not heard yet.)

Presuming it's Schiff's ECM recording (he also recorded it for Decca), it's superb.  I haven't heard the Crossley, so I can't say if Schiff is better or not, or even if the piece is for you, but the Schiff may work a bit better for you.

Oh, I didn't know there was an ECM recording.  I have the Decca recording which was part of a release by "Musiktage Mondsee" (whatever that is supposed to be).

The Decca recording is good, I just find the ECM better.  (The same holds true for all repertoire Schiff has recorded for both labels.)  If memory serves, Musiktage Mondsee refers to a musical festival that Schiff used to (and may still) direct.

Definitely! Made no impact on me the first time, but I kept listening and it soon became fairly clear that these were amongst the most touching and brilliantly written piano miniatures ever composed. I recommend the other set of miniatures On An Overgrown Path unequivocally also.

Not sure about your recording, I have Kvapil whom I love.
