Quote from: Spotted Horses on February 11, 2024, 09:58:10 AMConfirm, still doesn't work as of today (across multiple MacOS versions) although I've used it in the past. I certainly won't consider streaming from Qobuz, consider how inept they are.

Resorting to my work computer to download, which is a windows machine.

It is inexcusable!  This is not the 90s, there have to be almost as many Mac users as Windows users out there.

Does anyone here have experience with a VPN which would give me a UK IP number? :)
If you have Norton, you can select to use a UK VPN. This is how I watch some of the BBC streams.

Turn off secure vpn. in switching it back on, select the UK as a region. Re-start.

I always pronounce it ko-buz but mostly because I know nobody would correct me if I was wrong!

It is a Kazakh stringed instrument, so don't try to frenchify the name.  kobyz probably pronounced ko-bees??

The current free FLAC/MP3 download from Classic Selections is the excellent version of Rach. Symphony No.2 by Vernon Handley and the RPO

This is the original release cover but its been licenced to various companies with various covers since.  But it remains a version well worth hearing - and for free not to be missed....

Thanks.  I never heard of them before.  I see that they also have the magnificent Gewandhaus Q set of Beethoven SQs for a cheap price.

Classic Select World's free download at the moment is the "Big Americana Box"

https://www.classicselectworld.com/collections/free-downloads

Some really good stuff in here and not all standard "pops".  So some excellent versions of Copland & Bernstein including the latter's unusual "Anniversaries" for piano and the former's Piano Concerto which isn't exactly common.  But then there is Cowell and Ives, Morton Gould and Virgil Thomson too (the latter the famous Stokowski Vanguard recording).

As ever bit rates are low so not hi fi sound but for free this is a really enjoyable 7 hours!

I don't know how it's meant to be said, but that French combination of letters is probably something like "Ko-bews" or "Ko-byuse".

But it is not French!  That is the common mistake.  I explained it in earlier post... it is after a Kazakh instrument.

Maybe it is Kazakh for "it crashed again."

I really have enjoyed this free download.  Tons of Bernstein and Copland, some really good Ives, and the other stuff (Gould, Thomson, Cowell).  For free it's hard to beat.  I'd get it for Bernstein's "Anniversaries" alone.  Intimate Bernstein...who knew?

Chandos downloads are no more; they are closing up. They will focus their efforts on physical media.

QuoteDear Customer,

This email is formal notification that on 25th October 'The Classical Shop' will be closed for all digital download services. After this the website www.Chandos.net will become exclusively dedicated to Chandos Records, with the continuation of Chandos physical sales, and news and information about all that we do.

We are therefore offering you 90 days' notice in order to download again any products in  your order history if you so wish, or purchase new downloads in our up-coming sale. After the 25th October you will not be able to order any additional downloads but can continue to download products in your order history until November 29th. Of course, you can continue to buy physical products from the Chandos label though the website, and your account will remain open.

Before the closure we will offer one last digital download sale for all consenting labels. Starting from 30th August and ending 25th October with a discounts between 30% and 50%.

The reason for the closure is purely that sales of digital downloads have been decreasing year on year, with many customers preferring to stream from their favourite streaming service. It has now become un-profitable for us to continue the service, which we are very sad about of course, having been one of the first to offer Hi-Resolution downloads to the market and introduce many good labels. However, we understand that in the UK Presto Music will continue to offer a download service.

We thank you for your support over the last 20 years.

Do I read that right, they will discontinue digital download even for Chandos recordings (not just for other labels that have been available for download on their site)?

I'm starting to worry that DRM free downloads are going away.
