Hello GMG-ers:  In connection with research for a book project that I am co-authoring, I am seeking information regarding the Russian-American conductor Jacques Rachmilovich, the founder of the Santa Monica Orchestra in Southern California.  I am particularly interested in any particulars of his work in Rome in 1949 with L'Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and any details regarding his family and the date and location of his death.  Many thanks in advance for your assistance.  --  pnagle

According to Baker/Slominsky he was born in Odessa 8 October 1895. He studied in St. Petersburg, went to the USA in 1925. He created the Symphony Orchestra of Santa Monica in 1945. It seems that he was a conductor very interested in music of the 20 century.
I must say that it is the first time I heard his name.

You may want to contact vandermolen on PM as he wrote a little something about hime here: http://www.good-music-guide.com/community/index.php/topic,137.40.html

Also, this seems to be the same person: http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/russell-holmes-fletcher/whos-who-in-california-volume-1942-43-tel/page-175-whos-who-in-california-volume-1942-43-tel.shtml. Scroll down to him. Did he change his name at some point? It seems odd to have a Giacomo and a Jacques born in the same year and going to the same university (unless there were twins or something). You could probably do some public records searching. I'd also try other editions of the 'who's who' series to see if the information changes. A library might have that or be able to help you with that. You might also contact the Santa Monica Orchestra to see what info they have.
Be kind to your fellow posters!!
