Heard Barber's Summer Music on the radio the other night and was thinking I really should get it. Any recommendations?

Great piece!  Either of these is fine and both have excellent couplings:

And that's a great recording of Knoxville.  Wish I liked the couplings as much.

Knoxville: Summer of 1915
Great Knoxville, easily the best out there. However, the disc is ruined by the inclusion of the music of Harbison.

Summer Music is the wind quintet, right? I'm gonna say it doesn't really matter which one you get because there are so many good ones. I have the Liewrance (?) Quintet on... Summit?...which includes Carter, Persichetti, Berger, and Fine. Besides Schuller and Piston (which you can get), this is the cream of U.S. w.w. quintets. So, if you want to go all American, make sure that the cd you choose has Carter, Fine, and Barber (I think the Berger is also ubiquitous in this repertoire).

That Wein-Berlin Ensemble (?)... the one that records for Sony... they've traversed most of the European repertoire. I like the Villa-Lobos.

The slow mvmt of Nielsen's Quintet is where I'm coming from! ;)
