Reicha listening update
Reicha is somewhat deceptive, and it took me a while to make sense of him. At first listen he sounds an awful lot like Mozart, so the inattentive listener might be tempted to dismiss him as just a pleasant Mozart imitator, which I admit was my first reaction. But the music holds up really well on repeat hearings; construction is tight even over a long span. This Clarinet Quintet may not be quite on the level of Mozart or Brahms, but it's certainly not far behind. And the Bassoon Quintet (why didn't anyone else write for this combo?) is at least as good.

I'm really glad you've enjoyed those quintets; it wouldn't be a bad idea to get the third volume of the series, containing the flute and oboe quintets. Reicha being a flutist himself would hardly miss the opportunity to write a beautiful work for his instrument. I'm not sure if these two quintets are more interestingly built than the other three (Rejcha's formal experiments can be found everywhere), but they surely contain a lot of beautiful material.

Archaic Torso of Apollo

I'll certainly consider those, but at the moment it might be more important to hear some of the wind quintets. So I'll repeat my above question:

What do people think of the Reicha wind quintets on Naxos? Recommendable?

Unfortunately I cannot give you an answer, for I own the CPO set of wind quintets. But I will join you in the question. ;)

Well, I was in the 'old' thread linked by Que, so shall join in this one, too!  :D

I've not added much Reicha since then and currently own about a half dozen discs (5 being 'chamber works') - I also cannot answer the question about the Naxos selections, but I do have the Michael Thompson Wind Quintet of Danzi's works, which I find excellent; however, I can add another offering (if not now OOP?), i.e. Academia Wind Quintet of Prague on an Hyperion Dyad (contains five 'wind quintets' from Op. 88/91) - have not listened to these discs in a while, but remember them as quite good.

Now, I have had the CPO Box (assume Gabriel's set?) w/ the Albert Schweitzer Quintet on my 'wish list' for a long while; 10 CD set - guess that I was not happy w/ the pricing (should recheck, though) - this set received an excellent review in one of the music mags that I receive.

Another multi-disc option is w/ the Westwood Wind Quintet on Crystal Records - individual CDs are not cheap and not sure if this set is being offered as a box?  Plus, I'd appreciate thoughts & comments from others knowing these groups?  :)

I'd love to hear if anyone has gotten this. Seems like great music, but 10 discs is a lot - is it all good?

Well, I still own the same Reicha discs as in my previous post, but I'd still like to acquire many more of his wind compositions - he is GOOD!  :D

Currently, there seems to be just two groups putting these works together, i.e. the one already mentioned and the one on Crystal Records w/ the Westwood Wind Quintet; both remain rather expensive (to me at least) - I will likely acquire many more of these wind works but will wait better pricing -  :)

I really enjoy the ones I have on Hyperion (Prague Wind Quintet? Damned if I can remember, too lazy to go look ::) ), but they are far from a complete set. Those Westwood's look interesting for sure (PI), but as you say, $$$. I would be very content with the Schweitzer's too, although I heard just one quintet on the radio... :-\  Oh ,well, they'll pop up on eBay one day and then they'll be mine. :D

Snyprrr - I've never been able to locate his SQs on disc either -  :-\   According to Classical Net HERE, he wrote 23 of these works!  One would think w/ so many groups 'searching out' these lesser known composers and their unrecorded works, that our windy friend Anton might be right at the top for some performances!  :)

Looking on Amazon this morning, the closest that I could find was a String Quintet w/ Anner Bylsma and the usual, a group loved by Gurn and me - I'm assuming that Gurn already owns this disc?  In fact, I would order it NOW but the 'new' asking price is steep - might try a used copy?  Dave

search       Reicha "string quartet"

There is a blurb somewhere of a performing group who was practicing some of these things, and the commentary is tantalizing. Whhhhy is there no word on the one composer who seems to have LvB worthy type SQs out there? Maybe the Diotima, who just recorded those Onslow SQs, will turn to Reicha?

And yes, those Quintets are all we have. I listened to the samples recently, and they sound pretty hot! especially the sound of the playing

I have it. Bought it years ago for almost nothing: one of JPC's periodic specials. I'm in a rush right now (going to the opera tonight) but I'll report back.

It's an excellent disc of some very good music. This year I attended a concert in Paris where Christophe Coin played one of those quintets: pure delight.

Hello Gabriel - thanks for bringing this thread TTT! I went ahead and ordered a 'used' copy of that disc from the Amazon Marketplace just now - so hope that will play well - Dave  :)

So did I. I've been looking for that disk for a long time. I had rather given up on it because there were only ever 1 or 2 copies listed and I didn't have a first-born female child to trade for one. :-\  But now there are several, so thanks for the reminder. :)

Thanks, I'm contemplating a big order at Arta - nowhere more cheaper than there.

But do you have this recording? :)

Yes, but I have only listened to two times, long time ago; therefore, I can't offer a serious/useful comment at this moment. Anyway, I have listened to many times all my other discs by Tuma (WTC, Goldberg Variations, Inventions, Sinfonias & Duets; The Last Seven Words) and all of them have been totally suitable to my taste...  :)

BTW, I have also had his version of the AoF (organ) for long time in my wish list.
