When I was a kid, we used to buy comedy stuff on LP. I still have some of them--George Carlin, Rodney Dangerfield, Bob Newhart, and Cheech and Chong, etc..

Recently, a friend gave me a boatload of Alan Watts' lectures on MP3. For those of you who don't know, Alan Watts was probably the foremost popularizer of Zen Buddhism in the west in his day. His lectures date from the 60s and 70s, cover a great variety of topics including Hinduism, Buddhism, Zen, Japanese and Chinese Culture, meditation technique, ecology, consciousness, etc. He is certainly one of the most entertaining, erudite, and enlightening speakers I have ever heard. I don't agree with all he says, but he sure is interesting. For those of you who are interested, I believe they broadcast some of these lectures on KPFK (Los Angeles) and KPFA (Berkeley): http://www.kpfk.org/

We also have a couple of CDs with nature sounds on them, e.g. "Sounds of the Ocean" or what-have-you, but they don't really sound all that convincing.

What are your favorite lectures, nature sounds, comedy, drama, non-music, etc. on CD (or any other format)? Any recommendations?

David Timson has recorded the complete Sherlock Holmes canon on CD with excellent character voices and great pacing and excitement.  I listen to that a lot.

Bill Cosby CDs are fun as well.

Solitary Wanderer

I have a few Annea Lockwood cds which are all excellent like:

The Glass World ~ Fascinating sounds from a wide of glass objects; from deep gongs to light scratching sounds.

Soundmap of the Hudson River ~ My fave of her stuff. Literally a journey douwn the Hudson river accompained by various sounds; water, birds, horn from a distant train etc.

Sinopah ~ this is amazing too. Sqwarking birds, crackling fires, thunder and outer space 'noise' make for a intrieging listen.

From the sublime to the ridiculous...

I had some Bill Crosby and Cheech & Chong, Lenny Bruce and those Saturday Night Live guys on LP but don't find it amusing anymore  ;)

Kullervo

There has been construction in our apartment complex for nearly two weeks now, so usually I'm listening to dirty construction workers yelling and various motors and beeps.

It's a hot summer night in Florida, so I'm listening to loud frogs and the singing of crickets. The air conditioner is running full-time, and there's a cat laying on my lap, purring loudly.

Solitary Wanderer

Had tilers here all day puting in a new entranceway in our foyer. LOTS of noise and dust all day and its right by my studio, and they've had to remove my door, so I can't even play any music >:( Looks like they'll be back tomorrow too ::)

Still its begining to look great! :)

Bill Cosby CDs are fun as well.

One of my earliest recollections (I was probably 4) of actually sitting and listening to something was one my dad's reel to reel tapes of Bill Cosby discussing the 9th St. Bridge .  Great stuff!

Thanks.  From the film Sabrina (1954).

Guess I should copy this over to the avatar thread.

Last weekend, I had to drive for 9 hours, so I listened to an audiobook of Stephen King's Wizard and Glass, which is part of the Dark Tower series.

The reader does an excellent job with character voices and the story is entertaining enough. Definitely made the trip go MUCH faster!

What's wrong with your kitten, Kullervo? I do hope she'll be okay!

She has a cold or some sort of upper respiratory infection. She'll get over it, but snot bubbles are coming out of her nose. It's cute... in a sad and pathetic way.

Poor kitty, it doesn't sound good, maybe you should take her to the vet?
