What is the piano version like?

It is an "authoritative" transcription made by Elgar himself and worth hearing.

Quote from: Jeffrey Smith on December 17, 2016, 10:33:07 AMI do suggest you try the Bernstein recording mentioned upthread. You may like it or you may hate it: but it certainly different.

Okay.  :)

I've added 20 more since compiling that list of 16 almost 10 years ago, including desert island worthy performances from Boulez, Dohnányi, Solti, Stenz. But I have more M1s now: 38, with Honeck Pittsburgh leading the pack.

I have around 20 of some/most of the Beethoven symphonies and piano sonatas. Probably also Chopin's second sonata (of which I bought only one or two on purpose as single discs, they are so abundant in pianist boxes). And Brahms' first symphony.
Around 10 of a few other pieces, e.g. the Brahms symphonies, Bruckner 7th, Mahler's 9th, Schubert's symphonies 8+9, his string quintet (since the comparative listening two years ago? I culled one (Naxos) and bought two more (Melos/Rostro and Archibudelli) but I plan to get rid of some more), some of Beethoven's quartets and concertos, Missa solemnis, Diabelli and Goldberg variations and probably a few pieces by Haydn and Mozart.
But I think the bulk of my collection is not due to a few pieces in 10, 20 or more recordings but due to a lot of pieces in ~3-7 versions. Including pieces I am not even very fond of like Grieg's piano concerto or Tchaikovsky's 4th symphony because they are coupled with something I wanted or in some box I wanted for other stuff.

Mahler 3rd I lost count also...probably 30+, it gets to a point sometimes I see a recording and I am not sure whether I have it.
Also Schumann 4th, likely 20 or 30 also.

Kreisleriana is the clear frontrunner with 17, but that's a piece where I have expressly sought out alternate versions. There are also nine Op. 132s and nine of Brahms's Second, which just... accumulated.... somehow.

Just to demonstrate how different I am compared to typical classical music listeners I say to you I have only one recording of all these works except Beethoven's Violin Concerto - I don't have any performance of it. Instead I have 5 performances of Bruhns' Cantata "De profundis clamavi":)

I've got eighteen Lulus. I am a bit obsessed with the piece. I have resisted (so far), the DVD of the Met's William Kentridge production, which I really didn't like much.

That might eventually happen, if I keep buying more of those large boxes. I guess with these concertos (and even more so with the Beethoven symphonies), I have around 10-15 recordings I really want, but quite a few of the others turn out highly welcome, even though they were bought as part of large boxes and not really looked for in particular. Either way, I have multiple versions of many things because I do enjoy comparing. One of the starting points of my classical collection a few years ago was EMI's "Icon" series, and that alone accounted for multiple versions of many a violin or piano concert or sonata. We had the discussion elsewhere recently that buying boxes these days is often economically more sensible than buying two or three single discs. On top of that it also fits my never-ending curiosity - and I often end up making discoveries and opening new ways by making all kinds of unexpected discoveries in such box sets.

But there is, I guess, a touch of madness to all of this (I prefer to call it passion though, and necessity, also in order to stay sane in other respects)  :)

I don't do multiples much either, but a have a few pieces that just grew like Topsy. I have 105 Beethoven 9th's. That is the only work which I consciously collected a bunch of. Because of that, this morning I have the chance to listen to MacKerras and the OAE, live from Edinburgh... :)

You can still redeem yourself by getting all the Beethoven sonatas in at least one recording...

As I said, my collection is rather diverse with respect to multiple recordings of the same piece. I think I have two recordings of the Mendelssohn violin concerto (Heifetz stereo and Stern), maybe another one or two in boxes I forgot about (oddly, I have 3 recordings of his lesser known piano concertos). Probably 5 of the Brahms, 8 of the Beethoven and ca. 15 of Beethoven's 5th piano concerto (3 of which are in the Rubinstein Big Box and I have never listened to them...)

I mostly remember a general impression, not particular data points.  Don't ask me who does repeats, etc. I would even have to sit down and plumb my memory to give a list of which conductors are in those 40 cycles.  I can only tell you my favorites are Chailly for probing the emotional depths, Karajan 80s for the traditional big band sound, and Gardiner as representative of the HIP approach.
