I am off on my holiday to Austria tomorrow for 1 week and when I return I look forward to reading some interesting (haha) replies.

For me I like the Forum because:

1 My family does not share my musical tastes (are you suprised?) although my 21 year old daughter did actually enjoy Moeran at the Proms recently. Here, I find a congenial ( ;D) group of people with similar interests. The Forum has allowed me to make new friends - some of whom I have had the pleasure (and it was a real pleasure) of meeting.

2 The Forum allows me to show off my knowledge of 'tragically and undeservedly neglected obscure composers'

3 The Forum distracts me from boring stuff like work - but it can be a bit addictive.

4 I have discovered much great new music here - Hurum, Kleiberg, Ross Edwards, Schulhoff etcetc - I may never have otherwise discovered this music - not good for my bank balance and has lead to an increase in 'smuggling CDs into the house past your wife' activities.

5 I enjoy the interchange of ideas - not just about music.

#3 in spades! :D  Once I start teaching again soon that might change though...

I like that there is a core group of posters that have been around, and will always be around.  "You have always been here Mr Torrance." ;D

After I get over my envy that you're spending a week in Austria  8), I'll definitely agree with you.  ;D

Glad you like the forum, and I'd say "ditto" to all your comments.  PS, are you hearing any music on your trip?

I love GMG because it's been such an extraordinary resource for finding out about composers, works and recordings, because it's a delight to talk with others about classical music, and because it's so much darn fun. The first discussion board at which I was a regular concerned a grand strategy computer game, and the second third was this one; the others were much more tightly moderated. I have been impressed by the way the casualness of our atmosphere creates a nice feeling of goofing off while, despite that casual nature, crises happen rarely compared to many other places online. I've never been on a board where "Toilet paper vs. a stick" would have lasted this long. ;D I love GMG, too, because I'm 19 and only have 2-3 real life friends with whom I can have intense chats about classical music (though I'm lucky to have that many). And finally, I love GMG because you guys encourage my addiction.  :P

One of my real life friends has lurked on GMG before, but he hasn't registered. He says to me, "I don't know how you hold your own on that forum. Those people all know so much stuff! I'd be scared talking to them." I told him that my own solution is, when in doubt, just be a goof.  :)

Works for me. And I would rather listen to music than talk about it.

I feel your pain, I only have one classical music-loving friend and he's much older than I am. That's why I love this forum, it's almost my only way to get in touch with fellow CM-fans. Even if many discussions are too "erudite" for my knowledge, I've learned so much just by reading them!
Orgullosamente diletante.

Well, I haven't got many friends who love classical music or like to chat about it, that's why I come here and enjoy myself.
But 'grosso modo': I totally agree.

How fitting, to have a dancing banana in the post right after that picture...

Well, she slipped on a peel, you see, and fell, and that's how the violin wound up in pieces on the floor.
