I was curious to read what people would write in a forum about the only art that cannot be expressed in words.
Theres not much to tell about myself. The only composer I dislike is Richard Wagner because of his antisemitism. If someones interesseted here's a list of my favourite composers:
Tallis, Byrd, Depres, Palestrina, Monteverdi
Sweelinck, Scheidt, Buxtehude, Parchelbel
J. S. Bach, Handel
Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven
Weber, Schubert
Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms
Bruckner, Mahler, R. Strauss, Schönberg, Berg, Webern
V. Williams (his symphonies), Britten, Bartok, Hindemith
Stravinsky, Prokofieff
Shostakovich, Schnittke, Gubaidulina
Messiaen, Boulez, Stockhausen

I especially like modern 20thcentury music from italy and germany:
Italy: Nono, Scelsi, Dallapiccola, Berio, Bussotti, Evangelisti, Perezzabi
Germany: Henze, Rihm
Is there some of you who share the same interest for these composers and other modern composers?

Right now I study the symphonies of Mahler, Bruckner and Shostakovich. Any other who do the same?

I am a conducting student...

I love arts: On the left you'll se a painting by Gustav Klimt. If you know something about Mahler you properly also know this guy. Quite nice paintings he made... don't you think?
Kandinsky has a special place in my heart:
as well as Marc: and Matisse:

This painting is one of my favourites:

have a guess...  ;)

Hi Marple, and welcome.  That's quite a broad list of composers you like!  I love Mahler, Bruckner and Shostakovich (and most of the others on your list) but especially noticed the Italian and German ones above.  You'll find other fans of all those, and all the other ones you mentioned.

Anyway, enjoy your time here!

Hi Marple,

Welcome. I certainly share your interests and then a few more.  ;D I just recently discovered Dallapiccola a few years ago when the Frankfurt Opera performed Volo di Notte and Il Prigoniero. They also did Nono's un re in ascolto that same season.

But do you like his MUSIC (apart from any other consideration) ? .........

Steve

Welcome...

Do you still enjoy the music of Wagner? I detest Eliot's antisemetism, but I would never think of abandoning his work.

mahlertitan

welcome!

Have you ever heard of the guilty by association fallacy? imagine a Nazi officer in WWII Germany, he would almost certainly regard the works of Einstein as "Jew Physics", now is that the right attitude to approach anything?

Wagner was anti-Semite, that was his problem, but he wrote good music, we came here to listen to his music, not his opinions on racism.

that being said, there is no reason why you shouldn't bash Wagner the anti-semite in the Diner section.

Has Wagner's anti-Semitism caused you or anybody you know harm in any way?
So I guess you dislike Thomas Jefferson also because he owned plantations and slaves right? So he must all be a racist right?
Get off your high horse and try to appreciate music for what it is worth, instead of living in your pompous, self-righteous and pathetic supposed code of ethics will you?

Looks like Turner to me . . . .

Hello, Marple - welcome to the GMG Forum - you enjoy plenty of composers that interest us here, so looking forward to your contributions & perspectives.

My wife & I also have a long-time interest in the arts and have been to quite a few museums over the years; BTW, I'd agree w/ Karl on the painting quizz, i.e. William Turner - I've seen a lot of his paintings 'in person' but not that particular one - below is one that I like (although there are not many that I dislike, if any!) from Karl's home town that I'm sure he has seen a number of times (my last visit to the Boston Museum of Fine Arts about 5-6 yrs ago) -  :D

Nice painting, Sonicman. I guess it's the one with the slavers throwing overboard ... ?
About the painting I posted:
Shade and Darkness - the Evening of the Deluge
(1843; Oil on canvas, 78.5 x 78 cm)

Turner, yes... ;)

nice....... you've got pretty much the same tastes as I do. Welcome to GMG!  8)

Heather Harrison

You are likely to find a number of people here with similar taste.  Lately, I have spent a lot of time with Mahler's Third and Fourth Symphonies, and I am currently in the process of going through Bruckner's symphonies (which I had foolishly neglected until recently) and I see an obsession with his Fifth coming on.  Another favorite of mine is Shostakovich's Eleventh.

Welcome!

Sounds great! What edition for the Bruckner symphonies do you use?

I was wondering if some of you have had any experience with the series "New Collected Works of Dmitri Shostakovich" published by DSCH? Is is worth buying? ???

I think so ........ if it's the one that contains the symphonies under Barshai and the SQ's with Rubio ........ (I'm not sure about the other materials which comprise that set  :'()

I'm going through them by listening; I don't usually get into scores (although it does happen occasionally).  I just got Jochum's DG recordings of Bruckner's symphonies (except for Nos. 0 and 00).

Hi!

I'm part Jewish, and I had no problem ignoring Wagner's weirdness as a human being in order to explore and love his music.

Being biased against something of that nature (bigotry), to the point of not giving the composer a real try, is not only a form of bigotry ("fighting fire with fire") but a cheat...for yourself.
