Very transparently phishing, but some people still need to have this pointed out.  $:)

     I have Yahoo email. Apparently it's targeted frequently along with the other big mail services. The safe thing is to use image blockers and be wary of "click to see image". One thing I do with suspicious mail is to copy the title and paste it into Google. Often you'll get something informative. Another thing would be to navigate to the site on your own. If "Verizon" sends me something I just use my Verizon bookmark, and the same with Amazon and Newegg, etc. If it's real I can find out without clicking on anything in the mail. I bookmark any site that I transact business with so I have a safe path back if I need it.

     I use no firewall, no anti-virus, and I'm a compulsive surfer and downloader of just the kind of things that should get me into trouble yet I never actually get into it. It isn't entirely luck. I figured out what not to do and do everything else.  :D

Just a thought - how do you know you have no viruses or malware on your PC if you've never checked it out or do you occasionally do an online check?
Cheers

    No. I run my AVG Setup, do a scan and uninstall.

    Right now I have Panda Cloud Antivirus on Vista, and forgot I had it because it doesn't slow the system down noticeably. On Windows 7 I have nothing.

    Which reminds me, I should run Ad-Aware. I'll go to C> Downloads > Ad-Aware Setup, install, run, and uninstall.

    So, welcome to the machine, as it were. Must  restart  now .

Ernie, you disappoint me.  I figured you would be content only with OpenBSD behind three firewalls, and you only install software where you can look the source code line by line before compiling. ;D ;D

     I'll do a full scan later.  ::)

     Maybe next year.  ;D

     I wouldn't recommend that anyone do this unless fixing trouble is part of the hobby as it is mine. If my PC blows up I'll just take my flash drive with my escape pod rescue pack (browser with profile, plus My Docs), and plug it into whatever I can get from BB.

     Time to full Operational Status: 24 hrs.

     My reasoning is as follows: The time you spend preparing for the worst case scenario is Totally Wasted since a real 100 year blowup means a trip to the store and not some desperate attempt to pull data from a dead HD. And infections require at most formatting, not getting your affairs in order. So you never get back the investment in precautions you don't need to take, precautions you can easily manage by using the instincts you sharpen by normal use over the years.

     If you do work on your PC then the calculation changes, as it does if you just have the Granny sensibility that says "Oh, these new fangled machines, I just don't know what the world is coming to...."

     Yeah, one day we'll take pills instead of eating food. :)
