Quote from: Kalevala on May 28, 2025, 10:45:44 AMI'll give you a link to them; they're different than *grow bags.  Haven't seen gbs for sale in my area (as far as I recall).  The *ones that I saw are here:  https://www.johnnyseeds.com/search/?q=grow+bags&search-button=&lang=en_US

K

Edit:  the ones that I'm thinking of are (from what I recall) more of a bag of (I think) soil, compost, maybe some fertilizer which ones can plant things like tomato plants or other veggies...vs. planting them  into the ground (heard about them from UK friends in the past).

Not quite sure what those might be. The divided bags I have work great for my peppers and the large one in back has my potato plants.

Who makes them?  I don't know whether or not you saw my corrected post?

Ah, I see. They look awful small for anything other than a balcony or patio. They strike me as being something targeted to non-gardeners

Yes, I saw your post after I sent mine. The bags I have I bought through Temu over the winter. Very inexpensive (at least they were then before tariff time.) I don't know how long they'll last, but I thought I'd give them a try.

Doesn't look like they can hold any plants of substantial size.

I know one British gardener who used them to plant tomatoes--and no, not heirloom sized ones like various brandywines.  From what I recall, he put them down in his yard.

Adding halos gives plants including tomatoes more growing space.

From what I've read so far, it seems that "they" were pushing the idea that a halo allows two sets of roots to develop and less chance of cutworms and also too much moisture around the stem(s) and can help to cut down chances of diseases developing due to watering within the halo outer circle.

I'm curious as to what kind of tomatoes they are growing here.

Irons, have you used them for long?

Interesting. Shall have to try that when we get settled!

I did in the past K and still do for cucumbers. I have embraced the philosophy of "No Dig" gardening as promoted by Charles Dowding and the results have been impressive. Less disturbance of soil the better.

I'll check it out.  My issue is oftentimes plants that keep trying to invade/takeover my prime gardening spots.   :(

Having holders for the stakes is a nice perk, too.

O.k., it's getting warmer now....I'd swear that I see a few tiny signs of growth on my thyme plants.   Is it wishful thinking?  Fingers are still crossed here....Episode 13 of the "Thyme of my Life".

Banana tree (Musa Masjoo) not only grows to impressive heights but once established sends out "pups" (think correct term, but on the other hand may of dreamt it!). Two came up in the middle of a Fatsia I am fond of. I had no choice then dig them up. Banana is a statement so bunging in anywhere not an option, I did think allotment but decided against. Our allotment committee are selling plants for charity at a village open day in a couple of weeks time, maybe do that but no idea what to sell them for. The second pic is a view from an upstairs window of my house and too far to convey the stature of the plant. I am tempted to keep one and grow in a large pot on the patio.

Where are you? Alaska? On top of a mountain?

Re thyme, I grow them in an old sink. They seem to last about 2 years before dying. Is that par for the course? These two were planted at the start of March - maybe two's one too many.

Quote from: Irons on June 25, 2023, 01:02:06 AMA new toy that I am finding more then useful around both garden and allotment. Tying tomato plants to canes for example is tiresome, especially young plants. With this tool job completed in a second. How it works is beyond clever. Half close and the top arm grabs a length of fresh tape, fully close and tape is secured around both plant and support.
If interested shop around! Big variation in purchase price.

My tomato plants have reached the stage where they need staking, and once again, I need to thank you for recommending this tool a couple of years ago. An incredible time (and back) saver!

Cheers. Yes, in constant use this time of year with tomatoes doing what they do growth wise. Using blue plastic tape which does stand out attached to stem but less likely to miss at the end of season and leave buried. There is talk of biodegradable tape which would be good.

Biodegradable tape would be great! The tape I have is red, which sort of matches the tomatoes once they appear. It does create a bit of a Christmas tree effect when the plants get big.
