Famed opera director Harry Kupfer died yesterday December 30 in his birth town Berlin, aged 84.
One of the most prominent exponents of Regietheater, and was a successor of the legendary Walter Felsenstein at the Komische Oper in East Berlin).
His 1978 Bayreuth production of The Flying Dutchman was considered a landmark ( I was lucky enough to see it live in its second year), and is available on DVD (as is his futuristic “laser” Ring from Bayreuth with Daniel Barenboim in the pit).
I saw three other of his productions (Wagner and R. Strauss were his main focus): the Berlin Staatsoper productions of Tristan und Isolde and Die Meistersinger, on tour in Madrid in the late 90s (both conducted by Barenboim), and Salome in the Unter den Linden theater some 10 years ago (conducted by Philippe Jordan).
He was a leading figure in the operatic scene in the last quarter of the 20th century. R.I.P.
