Hi there,

I would like someone to recommend me a single CD of J.S. Bach that they have in their collection that they think is indispensable. Some amazing recording worth adding to my collection on this Saturday in September. Please only single CDs!  :P

thanks

Most "indispensable Bach recordings" don't come on "single discs", so I'm going to recommend the Cello Suites by Anner Bijlsma. You could always throw the 2nd disc away...? 8)

Thank you  :D I found it online and I am downloading it now. I don't have any version of this music so it is even better.

Dang that was fast!  I didn't even get a chance to say Goldberg Variations! :D

Jaime B

too late  ;D got springrite's recommendation.

Well if that ends up getting you crazy for more Bach, stick around the final stage of the greatest Bach multithreads kicks off on Monday and at the end of that will be a short list (like 10 works per genre) of a gmg sampler to get people into Bach. :)

Indispensable single CDs of Bach's music for me reduce to two:  Goldberg Variations (current faves: Schiff on ECM, Hewitt on hyperion) and Violin Concertos BWV 1041, 1042, 1043, 1060 (last w/oboe--current faves Suwanai, Kennedy, or Hahn).  I would also heartily recommend Edgar Meyer's single CD of selected cello suites played on double bass (but you really should have the complete suites on cello on 2 CDs!).

Perhaps one day you would care to explain to me why you only want single CDs but the title of this thread is Your Best Bach.  Well my best Bach comes in 2 CDs and if you don't have this you don't know what your missing:

Sorry Jai but as others on GMG who are familiar with me will tell you I tend to be a non-conformist  8).... ::)!!

  enjoy your Bach

That one is about as good as it gets, although I find Hantai's earlier version on Naive/Astree very rewarding as well.  For me, the piano equivalent of Hantai's exuberant account (earlier one) is the Schiff on ECM that David has praised.

That one is indeed truly awesome and I could kick myself for ever letting it go.

From my rather small collection, I would choose the 1981 recording of the Goldberg Variations, by Glenn Gould.
