I have just got hold of Muti's 7-CD box of the masses and requiems. This is really splendid stuff, by turns imposing, invigorating and moving. Why these wonderful scores were neglected for so long until Muti championed them for EMI completely defeats me: instead of trotting out yet another Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven mass let's hear Cherubini live in concert. Audiences would love these large-scale settings.

A piece is worth your attention, and is itself for you praiseworthy, if it makes you feel you have not wasted your time over it. (SG, 1922)
