Again, can't imbed, but, hey, it's 15 cds of the wildest stuff. It appears all their recordings are here, I mean, I just soiled myself! Anyone? Bueller?

Archaic Torso of Apollo

By an interesting coincidence, just the other day I listened to The Percussions' recording of the awesome Xenakis work, Pleiades, for the first time in ages. "Wildest stuff" indeed.

Hah!  The box is not available on any of the streaming services; so I was compelled to purchase it outright.

Definitely tempting, given that of all the works here,  the only one I have is the Boulez, and that one in a different recording (Boulez's own).  The downside is the high probability that I won't like much, if any of this, given my usual preferences in 20th century music.

Okay, I gave in to temptation.  Just ordered it from ImportCDs, although their stock status for it is "ships in 5-10 days".

Eeeeexcellent!

Having now finished a first run through of this set,  I can make some general observations
--the major flaw, and it's a really major one,  is the total lack of documentation about the composers and the music included.  The small booklet is focused solely on the Percussions de Strasbourg ensemble.  If you want to know anything beyond the years in which the composer was born,  died (when appropriate), and when the specific work was composed,  you will need to find it on your own.
--not so important flaw: because this is such a percussion oriented set, there can be a certain sameness to the music,  but that can be cured simply by listening to each work by itself, instead of doing what I usually do, and which I did on this run through--listen to the whole CD at one go.

Positive:  I am not a fan of serialist/modernist music of the mid 20th century, and feared that I would be hearing much I would not like.  That turned out to be unfounded.   While I am not saying I liked everything I heard,  I certainly did not dislike anything I heard, and look forward to repeated relistenings to the individual pieces.    There was music which perhaps stretched the limit of what we call "classical' or "serious" music,  but it was stretched in a good way.

not so important positive point:  Stockhausen is not represented in this set.  :P

Given my unfamiliarity with the music,  I don't want to pick out any individual works as particularly well done,  but I think anyone interested in the music of the 20th century should get it.  Just be prepared to do a lot of internet searching.

(And a big tip of the hat to Snyprrr for bringing this set to our attention)

I listened to this from first disc to last.  The bolded works I enjoyed a bit more than others but found this box very good overall.

Ah, tell me more about the Mache. The samples are worthless...

I can appreciate that you like more than you thought you would. For some reason, a lot of modern percussion music just has that 'it' factor- yes, very little that is outright ugh.

It's still out of my $$$ range at the moment, but it's like porn every time I see this thread, haha!! I want it and I will haaave it!! mm mm mm
