Although Boris Godunov is considered Musorgsky's masterpiece, I like Khovanshchina better.

Dana

I wasn't aware that Mussorgsky had written any masterpieces...

Zing!

Anne

;D  You will have to remedy your loss on that quickly.

Do what I must do, and let what must happen happen.

I prefer Tannhäuser and Lohengrin to Die Meistersinger.

Me too and I like Die Meistersinger (von Nürnberg:-) tons better than Parsifal.

I like Tchaikovsky's 2nd Piano Concerto better than his 1st.

Seconded. I love them both (in that order) but why isn't the Second performed at all?  >:(

;D  Me too!  I like all his other operas especially Tristan (Furtwangler recording).

Guido

I much prefer Schumann's piano quartet to the piano quintet, though both are masterpieces (obviously).

Bartok's Divertimento for strings is one of my all time favourite pieces - gorgeous, spicy, fantastic string writing - so much better than the rather still-born concerto for orchestra - I'm being deliberately provocative (obviously).

Great thread idea!  :)

I prefer Siegfried over the other three more popular Ring operas.

Brahms' Symphony No. 1 over No. 4

Schubert's Rosamunde String Quartet # 13 over # 14 and # 15

For example:  I find I enjoy listening to Mendelssohn's "Reformation" Symphony much more than his "Italian" Symphony

Ditto, Hornmeister!

ChamberNut

Bruckner's 3rd and 5th over the 7th

Dvorak's 7th and 8th over his 9th

Beethoven's Cello Sonata No. 4 over No. 3

ChamberNut

Snyprrr:  'Every lesser string quartet to the acknowledged masterpieces'  ;D

Just kidding, dude.  ;)

ChamberNut

Mahler's Symphonies 1 to 7, 9 and 10 over the 8th.   ;D :D 0:)

Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 and No. 4 over No. 5

Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet Suite No. 1 over No. 2

Surely that's normal - the 8th is one of the weakest of all of the symphonies.

Shostakovich's cello concerto no.2 over no.1, though again, both are certainly masterpieces.

Ohhh Guido!  I'm sure several Mahlerite Extremists would disagree with you!  $:)

Guido

I'm not too bothered! It's a fairly widespread critical consensus.
