It was a fun night at the Pops, witty arrangement of BolĂ©ro, they played well.  But I haven't formed an 'attachment' to the group, FWIW.

Anyone would think he was going to be castrated. My milk of human kindness is completely drained....well, I think it will be at least five hours until it is replenished.

Meantime, I will be listening to the new release from Pink Martini.

Mike

What is wrong with a little fun Mike?
Human kindness is all what we all like to have right?
Thank you all for making this thread so much fun.
I will get my tuxedo and build myself up.
I'll take all advise with me, and have a great time.

Can somebody tell me if the 'Symphonic Synthesis' by Mussorgsky is actually from the Boris opera.

I have listened to this regularly from Stokowski's 6cd Decca set, perhaps its just one of those Stoki reworks?

Reason being if the music 'Symphonic Synthesis' does form a large part of the Boris opera then I would say Harry may very well be delighted, as much as I was; to hear such wonderful music.

Not knowing the opera myself....just thought I'd ask  ;)

Tony, you're just trying to give Harry an 'out', aren't you?  ;D

Of course  ;D

Like I say, I don't know the opera myself but if this suite is part of it then Harry will be head over heels, really sumptuous music....somebody please tell me it is.

Well, I can do this much, at least:  yes, the music for Boris is sumptuous!

A thing that Harry must have experienced himself by now.  :)

Tony, Yes the synthesis is all the work of Stokey. He also did an arrangement that used the bass to sing some of Boris's music. A recording exists. In addition he did something similar with Tristan.

There was this one bit in the Mahler Second which echoed the Yurodivy in Boris . . . .

Harry, I'd appreciate a FULL report of your opera adventure! ;D

Just got back from the Pollini recital and logged straight in ... after all the build-up, I'm expecting nothing less than The Retreat From Moscow.

Did Pollini sing?

Mike

Not half.  Particularly in some of the shorter Liszt pieces.

Glenn Gould hummed.

Oh I don't mind it, not at all.  His voice is not that musical, mind you - but this is not a machine, it is a man.

Say it again and loud, please! Maybe those who accuse Pollini of being cold, mechanical and feelingless will hear.

9.33am in the UK, Silence from the Opera Buff. I am wondering whether Boris 'did' for Harry! There again, he may be happily busy with a bulk opera order to Amazon.

I'm quite worried.  ::)

Spontaneous combustion? Straight off to commune with Mother Russia? Perhaps just a lot of restorative beer after the show. If still silent at noon, we arrange an intervention.
