About time too - I was about to complain about all of those... unnecessary smells you were making ;D

The fault is yours, it would be an easy mistake to make on my part.  You should have clarified what you meant if you didn't want anyone reading into your post praise of Golovanov's recording.

Ridiculous.

In the 1930's and 1940's I believe Rachmaninov openly stated that the Philadelphia Orchestra under Ormandy had a knack for his music.

That makes me feel better for liking Ormandy's Rach.  Also think Stokowski is pretty cool too. :)

There's a story that Rachmaninoff was present at one of the rehearsals for the Symphonic Dances premiere, and as Ormandy was leading the rehearsal, Rachmaninoff gradually stood up and began to conduct, apparently rethinking how they should be going.  After a few minutes, one of the players demanded, "Maestro, whom should we follow, you or Rachmaninoff?" :o ;D So if you want "authenticity" in Rachmaninoff, the Ormandy/Philadelphia recordings are as authentic as they come. 8)

There will never be another era like the Golden Age of Hollywood.  We didn't know how to blow up buildings then so we had no choice but to tell great stories with great characters.-Ben Mankiewicz

Ormandy's uncut Rach Symphony 2 (1973) is my all-time favorite recording of that symphony.

Didn't Lenny Bernstein pretty much champion himself? ;D
Last time I checked Lenny wasn't an ensemble.

Well if you followed the conversation, you would have observed that we have been talking about conductors for awhile now. :P

When I was MUCH younger, I once asked my mother, as avid a music fan as I am, which was her favorite orchestra.  She thought for a moment, then answered, "Toscanini." ;D
