I pulled that quote from a lyrics site.  I always thought it was "blowing his nose" myself, given the weird honks that follow.
"If it sounds good, it is good."
Duke Ellington

Ah! All is clear, then.  Isn't the first mis-quoted line from a lyrics site.

I must confess I tend to mangle lyrics so badly I tend to trust the sites more than my ears-- which is not an endorsement of the sites....

As long as this thread seems to be about weird time signatures, I remember one person who complained about Don Ellis's band using so many odd time signatures (27/16 among others) bemoaned that fact that "the only thing they play in 4/4 is Take 5!"

(which, for non-jazzers among you, is in 5/4 time.)
"If it sounds good, it is good."

Not as scary as it may look, probably.  9/8 is three beats to the measure, the dotted-quarter getting the beat;  9/16 is essentially the same, scaled to the dotted-eighth for the beat.

Not sure I see the point in notating that way, but 27/16 looks to me like three bars of 9/16 . . . .

or just a bar of 4/4 plus 2 quarter notes and 3 16ths notes...

Well, [ 4/4 + 2/4 + 3/16 ] or [ 3/4 + 3/4 + 3/16 ] would be fun.

What do you do when you are working on a major project but other ideas keep poking you in the ribs and saying, psst over here...?

Indulge them until the original task starts to distract you. ^___^

But there are ever so many of them.  :'(

When I start composing again, I'm just going to have to set aside an hour or two of free time almost every day where it's just me, the keyboard, and my staff paper- everything else having its own time.
If something small needs attended to and it's impossible to concentrate because of it, i'll have time to take care of it and get it out of the way.
That's the plan- hopefully it'll work...
