I was going to continue with the US Electronc Music series this week, but I stumbled upon a cache of out-of-print CDs by the legendary pioneering minimalist composer La Monte Young, and so AGP158 is the first of (probably) three devoted to his work. These CDs are so rare that used copies of some of them sell for hundreds of dollars each.

This week's installment features The Melodic Version (1984) of The Second Dream of The High-Tension Line Stepdown Transformer, from The Four Dreams of China (1962), from a 1991 Gramavision CD (R2-79467). The recording features The Theatre Of Eternal Music Brass Ensemble led by trumpeter Ben Neill. Here the sustained tones produced by the brass section eerily imitate the sounds of the electrical power transformers that Young remembers listening to as a child in Bern, Idaho. This is music stripped down to its bare essentials--just four notes, in fact--so that the harmonic relationships between the complex timbres of those notes can be relished. This work makes the more austere passages in Horatiu Radulecu's Inner Time II (AGP109) sound in comparison like piece by Conlon Nancarrow. It's not for everyone.
