I've got hold of a recording of the most famous of Erkel's operas- he's Hungarian born 1810 a year before Liszt; it's eclectic and rather predictable stuff obviously and only a number opera but the Verdian-Borodinian influences are infused with a small voice of his own. Amongst the earthy folky stuff, and the usual eastern European gloomy tragic atmosphere, is a marvellous melody for the male voices that I've heard before but not sure where...
