I'm thinking Agalloch-The Mantle is what you need. You could also check out Cruachan for a Celtic twist on Folk Metal but it is several orders of magnitude lower in quality than the Agalloch. If you like The Mantle then you could also check the bands Empyrium and Fen but at this point we're moving away from folk and heading more into Black. For absolutely top draw Folkish inspired metal but with growls I would thoroughly recommend Drudkh-Autumn Aurora.

Thanks!

"Do give Einsiferum a try, though."

Yes, these folks definitely show possibility.

Agalloch, not so much. Too black metal.  :P And I like songs.  :)

Copper.

I'm more of a cobalt person myself, but it might be just a transition phase.

My problem with power metal is the speed at times. widdly widdly widdly widdly wheeeeee....

Slow it down and give me some space.

I am just an old heavy metalhead I guess.  ;D

I do have to say... possibly the most extreme metal band is Napalm Death, after listening to bits of quite a few bands. Unless anyone objects.

I am not foolish enough to make it but there could be an argument made that punk rock ruined heavy metal.

Anyone listen to Thergothen? Music that slow provides a very interesting flavor, and I quite like it.
