Well, I'm 23, so I have at least two more years before I can "grow out" of it. :D

Hell, I didn't start really listening to it until around 11 years ago. And ... I was over Todd's cut-off by that time.  ;D

CD

I think it's taken me until now to get over thinking that music should be representative of my personality.

MN Dave

Indeed. In my case, it couldn't be, unless I'm schizophrenic.  ;D

And that's the conclusion I reached when I was 17, and realised I was listening to Rammstein and Beethoven, and liked them both. ;D

(By now I've come to realise I really am schizo my musical tastes do revolve around some sort of identifiable aesthetic axis, mostly based around formal and textural qualities that I admire in a musical sequence of sounds. 8))

Yeah, in other words, you like what you like.  ;D

Progress so far:

Burzum - Filosofem (Mostly pleasantly unpleasant, but can do without the attempts at ambient music)
Darkthrone - A Blaze in the Northern Sky (Not as slow and funereal as I'd like, and the vocals are unintentionally hilarious. Probably won't listen again.)
Xasthur - Subliminal Genocide (This is more like it. I could live with this.)

MN Dave

Corey, this is a path I never expected you to travel.  ;D

greg

I'm kinda following along (just turned on some Xasthur) and didn't expect myself to be listening to such stuff, either. It's still hit and miss and hard to get into the vast majority of stuff I hear, though.

The dark side beckons me to plunge into its gaping maw, and I must heed.

greg

Well, we knew you were crazy since you listen to Babbitt and watch youtube poops. Evil isn't that far from craziness.  ;)

???

Videos made by people using sources like old children's cartoons and unfunny TV shows/commercials and remixing them to make something absurd/offensive/hilarious.

Chances are you'll either think this stuff is the funniest thing ever or see it as a sign of an impending apocalypse. :D

I would second any of Lethe's recommendations - she originally turned me on to Opeth and Meshuggah and now Negura Bunget - which is this phenomenal Black Metal meets Bartok thing

Also, the French band Blut Aus Nord has not been mentioned yet

Per Todd's point,  I am just past 40 and listening to alot of metal - but the null hypothesis of a midlife crisis cannot be ruled out

So, you say "Opeth" and "Meshuggah" and then mention these names I've never heard before.

(goes off flying right behind Renfield)

If I like Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Blue Oyster Cult, I will also like...?

No answer to this occured to me at the time of your post, but I recalled a few of the doomy NWOBHM bands. Witchfinder General are just neat, they liked Black Sabbath... a lot. Only Pagan Altar's first album counts, the other two are reunion ones (but still good) - there's nothing else like this band:

Both bands have acquired taste vocals.
Peanut butter, flour and sugar do not make cookies. They make FIRE.

MN Dave

Yep. Knew about those. Thanks.  :)
