BTBAM: Swim to the Moon

This isn't even their best, but a good intro to BTBAM. Like King Crimson, their music is capable of an extremely wide range of expression, each aspect of which they master. Actually, I can't think of any other band so talented in each aspect. But of course, all that's left is whether it suits your tastes or not...

Jazz Metal?

Yes-meets-Death? I need vocals.

Man, this is like Pandora, isn't it, where you tune in "the Zappa channel" but after a single Zappa track they play what. ev. er.

Something like that, I guess.
Isn't Queensryche supposed to be prog metal? Why does this sound nothing like prog metal then...?

Yes, a lot of progressive seems like boring meandering...to me.

My favorite Crimson is the Belew stage in the early '80s(?).

Are they the best rock has to offer? Hell no.

Probably some sentiment is partly at play, but I cannot quite choose between Red and Larks' Tongues in Aspic. In a way, this answer surprises me, because on the whole I prefer Adrian Belew to John Wetton as both singer and writer of lyrics.

Red is my favorite so far, though I'd probably have to give some of the albums a few more listens before I could say for sure.

Red is damn good KC album. So is Larks' Tongues in Aspic,

Lizard was THE song that blew my mind when I sampled KC online 4.5 years ago (is it only 4.5 years since I found this awesome music?? It is!) so the whole album Lizard is very special to me. I think it's the first real KC album that has KC "style". The first 2 albums are damn good (well Poseidon perhaps not that good - it's my least favorite of KC) prog rock rather than KC rock.

Lizard ----> Red is a damn good string of albums, Islands being perhaps the weakest effort of the era (still great). Two last albums are awesome too (KC invents "futurock") and Thrak isn't bad either.
Spatial distortion is a serious problem deteriorating headphone listening.
Crossfeeders reduce spatial distortion and make the sound more natural
and less tiresome in headphone listening.

Is King Crimson the best rock music has to offer? No, they're not. I love progressive rock, but I've always loved Alternative rock music too, especially from the early to mid 90s.

A few examples of some favorite tunes:

The last video isn't available in my contry but the others aren't even close to KC imho. Sonic Youth was closest to my personal taste. I have never been into grunge. Some ten years ago I found 2 great soft rock (different from grunge) bands:

Lowgold (UK)

Kashmir (Denmark)

Interesting, for me, Lizard is the least representative album of King Crimson by quite a margin. Still enjoy it very much though.

Oh and yes, King Crimson is the best rock music has to offer. :D

If you don't like a style of music, then how can you compare a style that you never liked with a style you actually enjoy? Apples and oranges, my friend. Alternative rock was another path in rock and it really needed it after many years of stagnation. Anyway, King Crimson isn't the only rock band that ever existed. Quite frankly, I find it amusing that you don't recognize this and insist that they're somehow the one golden truth in rock. The reality is there's a lot of great music in the rock idiom that ISN'T progressive rock.

Shouldn't rock music...um...rock?  ;D

I suppose (the thread title notwithstanding) I am well content with what the Crimsos do, even if it be not rocking : )
