Not only is this thread nearly dead, the last pages have nothing to do with CDCDCD.  Why? I think the reason is because the days of irresistible box sets is coming to an end.
I think you may be right. But to your final sentences I will add that however cheap, one needs time to play it all, and whatever caution I exercise has more to do with that and with duplication of repertoire than anything else.

Yes, too much duplication is not good. About time, I'm not worried.  I anticipate living for a long time. If I die sooner, I will probably not regret the purchases 8)

Not only is this thread nearly dead, the last pages have nothing to do with CDCDCD.  Why? I think the reason is because the days of irresistible box sets is coming to an end.  In the final analysis it will turn out that we were not afflicted with an illness, but rather we were illogically fighting the natural, sensible desire to buy lots of fantastic music at 1/8 the normal price.  That fount of musical bliss seems to be running dry.  In the future, I fear we will all repent our parsimony and caution, and when once again shelling out $18 per disc, ask ourselves repeatedly why we ever could have thought spending $120 for 50 discs of legendary music we knew that we would eventually enjoy was something we needed to fear and avoid. Exercise restraint at your own peril....

Nope.  I bought too big box sets recently and will probably by more.

Actually, it was my evening whiskey that triggered it :)  Right now I would LIKE to be tempted to buy something, but there isn't anything out there right now that is very tempting :'(

I fear you might be right about the big boxes. It's the majors getting some value for their back catalogues, which are a wasting asset. But there is also clear a market for people willing to buy discs by the pound. Companies can market to those weirdos without directly affecting sales to normal human beings very much. It's a very effective form of price discrimination (to use the jargon). So at some level, maybe not the HOLY COW YOU MUST BE KIDDING ME low price level we see now, it will persist. Back catalogues accumulate.

I would think it would be by the kilogram given the international nature of the market.  I'd be down with that if I could select the recordings, even generally.  Say, $100/kg for 1960s orchestral recordings, $75/kg for 1950s orchestral recordings, etc.

I am certifiable. I should change my name to kenbrrr ...

I must focus on my Ligeti Project box. Like taking a cold shower or thinking about your great aunt Edna.

Isn't Marriner more of a "paving the way to HIP" guy? I have plenty of the "mature product", so, when i saw this in my shop (here already) I didn't give it much thought.  The Ricercar looks good, but I have a lot of Teleman now, and eventually plan to get the DHM (or is it HM?) Telemann box.  No, it's going to take better than these.  Thanks for your concern, however 0:) 0:)

Yeah, the Telemann is a better choice than Marriner.   I am always concerned!   >:D

I think Baklavaboy is considering the DHM box. I find it very enjoyable (especially the five "Constant Music Master" recordings).

A buddy hosted a party and gave a copy of the same CD to every guest because he had that many extra copies without realising it.

Now, he surely belong here. We may even make him honorary chair (and he may give a copy of something else to everyone here as well).
