The worst ones are from the USA as they come with some sort of 'security device' sticker that is virtually impossible to remove.

I never understood the purpose of this either. Thieves aren't really going to steal a recording of Strauss's Four Last Songs are they? :o ??? If they do then they excellent taste. :D

I'm having a little time of it right now.

I've gotten to a good point, but the joy of getting new stuff in the mail makes me feel wanted,...haha, and so I just want to BUY something!! :o ahhh!!!

Money is low,... I mean loooooooooooooooow, so I really need to wean myself into hobby mode, and stop teasing myself.

Recently, 3 copies of the Arditti/Schoenberg SQs became available on Amazon for less that $30. One was billed as being only played a few times, which, for a big box released in the early '90s, is pretty good. Anyhow, OTHERS must be in the same predicament as me, because that cd was gone within 24hrs.! So, I got the one with the better blurb. I'm sucoring myself, telling myself that I'd RATHER have the less pristine copy. It's working! :-*

Ahhh, but I need to get a grip here. For a year which I thought was going to be a slow one for cds, has instead turned into business as usual. And, 'usual' means obsessive.

Oy! ::)

Just said "Hi" to my mailman, his response was, "No packages today" .

All I wanted was a simple, "Hello" in return, not a extra rubbing of my CDCDCD in my face...jerk. :'(

A thief having excellent taste, is no consolation for having been thieved ; )

Good point, Karl. :D

I admit, that, recently, I had gotten to a point where... I got these 'last' two cds in the mail, and, all of a sudden, I felt at peace with The Library. I really really felt like I had, now, at last hit each and every base,... bla bla bla, but I also felt a twinge of regret, though this was surely the Consumerist in me, and not the Music Lover.

The Library has been getting tighter and tighter lately, but, with these last two 'bricks' in place, all of a sudden, Indiana Jones style, I could 'see' whatever it was I had only been visualizing in my head up until that point. And these two cds were pretty random, though, to admit, one was Messiaen's Turangalila, which certainly is a big 'brick'.

So, what I'm saying is, that I really do have plenty of stuff to get deep with, and sure, there's plenty of Materialism I could acquire, but, with YouTube there to spoil the surprise anytime you want (in some cases), my BuyBuyBuying is just EhEhEh.

I think of The Library as a City of People,... mm, there I go Glass Menagering! ;) ::) ;D

So today I bought two more Messiaen cds just because I was depressed and wanted to make myself feel better. I got the account down to less than a cd (haha,... what torture!, haha) so that I CAN'T get anything (ha... ha??), and, really, I neeeeeed to switch gears here. Even so, these two cds really make things redundant, so, I really need to switch to absorption mode.

I'm kind of feeling like I haven't really gotten to know the last 6 months of 'purchases',... er, 'friends'! :-[ ;D I'm really in a 'nothing new under the sun' way lately, so, I think it's safe for me to out to pasture.

FUTURE REFERENCE:

Here are some of my MOs:

1) If I Love a Composer, I like to root out ALL the Masterpieces, no matter how many crappy records I have to pay full price for,... oh, no, I don't do THAT anymore, haha, that's for sure. But, there's always that temptation.

2) I have a love of 'crappy' music (see "Addicted to CRI-Reissues"). This is basically where I'm at now. All the bases have been covered and now there is only the esoteric of the esoteric. Thankfully, lots of the cds I'm looking for cost mere pennies on Amazon (more often than not at this point).

3) I will get anything... well, again, not anymore. Obviously, being UltraPoor makes you have to smarten up quick! I have learned to want less. The problem is, buying stuff makes us FEEL GOOD, like a drug, because hitting that button release the chemicals in your brain, just like any other 'stimulus' would.

4) I just found a piece I already had, but had forgotten about, so, today, I have a brand new piece to hear! Yaaay!!

I will admit that I've spent...mm,... hundreds of dollars on new music this year. I'm sure all I need to do is to follow my postings, haha. It does seem to be more than I had initially hope for, but, thankfully, it appears that 'cd season' may be severely tapering off here in the 2011.

I ate the elephant... one bite at a time. And now there's only dessert.

I've had to come to terms with this one lately, after realising just how much my financial situation had changed from last year (I bought a property, and now mortgage, council rates, insurance etc mean I have almost no disposable income). So: no eating out, no taxis, NO IMPULSE CD PURCHASES.

Oh no!! You can impulse buy,... just don't eat... food!! ;)

I seriously seem to have hit a buying block. I just don't care to buy anything. Nothing says, Buy Me Now!!

This must be a good thing, but, of course, I love getting things in the mail and opening presents! Ahhh, what to do?

I haaave been enjoying just listening to things that I'm not too familiar with, things I'm coming back to, and finding little surprises I didn't know I had.

But if I'm not getting anything NEW... nevermind... there are plenty of 'new' things to find in what is already here. Enough!! >:D

Amyhow, just saying that I haven't bought anything, really, since the EastCoastEarthquake,... that seems like a while ago, doesn't it? Must be some kind of record, and not by me trying, either,... it just happened that way.

I AM noticing a pattern in my listening habits though,... very interesting to whom I am listening. Huh! ;)

I like buying stuff - it's nice - and I amass a lot of CDs, but once I have them in my hands I rapidly find that I do very little with them and they become pointless trinkets that I wish I could be rid of. A bizarre and self-defeating cycle.
Like most of us in the developed world these days, it sounds as if you've been brainwashed into mindless consumerism, reinforced by virtually everything you see or hear in the mass media.  Welcome to the vicious cycle of addiction: a growing feeling of uneasiness, at once overcome by anticipation of a new purchase, mild euphoria as the hunt closes in on the quarry, then a brief moment of ecstasy followed almost immediately by disillusionment and emptiness, leading to a growing feeling of uneasiness, etc.

I know the feeling well.  ;)

Since March - and excluding birthday gift card purchases - I have made exactly two (2) CD purchases! An Ansermet "Original Masters" box set and Vasily Petrenko's Rachmaninov, autographed by the man himself in Liverpool. :)

Now, I did get I think 6-7 CDs with gift cards after my birthday in August, but that's been it. There is, however, an MDT cloud on the horizon, since I want to haul in some Praga CDs while they have that sale. And my Amazon wishlist is growing huge...

(...good thing I finally have a job!  ;D )

Did you actually get to talk to him, Brian?  If so, I hope you told him that his Shostakovich symphony cycle is 'effin' awesome dude!   8)

My collector's life tends to be organized around (not reduced to but organized around) the search for a small number of extra-rare & much wanted items. I keep telling myself that when I find them I will be freed somewhat from a compulsion. But then, when the much-wanted CD pops up somewhere and I have nailed it (sometimes for less than the cost of postage, other times for an irresponsibly high price), immediatly a new search begins - for a second copy of the rare CD, and then a third...

I do stuff like that. :( All those Accord and Adda cds I passed up for pennies in the bins when I didn't know.

By the way, is this also how you date? haha ;) ;D

This is the kind of weakwilled effort that will result in your account being deleted.

I have given up on restricting myself. If something nice gets along, and the price suits me, I simply buy it. Resistance is futile! This I found out long ago.

That's the spirit!  :P

I've restricted myself to $100 over June-Sept for CDs. I then extended it to October as I still have a lot I want to listen to again, and besides I had $20 left over. I won't be extending it to the holidays though.  0:)

It's weird because I only feel this way about CDs. As a medium they feel less enduring than books, which I am happy to amass. Clothing, PC parts all pose no issues, but CDs bug me no end ???
