It's a wonderful set in terms of performance, but I really dislike the sound (the ONLY Hyperion I can think of where I don't like the sound of the 50 or so I have from that series, but there you go). I would recommend the Roge/Dutoit or other version over the Lane for that reason. It will be cheaper for sure.
Actually, I'm talking about Piers Lane's solo CD of the three sets of etudes. Clicky clicky.

I had a mild flare up many nights ago, but I seem to be doing better now. Results of the flare up:

-Delius Edition - Decca, 8-CDs
-The Delius Collection - Heritage, 7-CDs
-Delius: Sea Drift, Appalachia, Stefan Sandering, The Florida Orchestra, Naxos
-Delius, Ireland: Piano Concertos, Piers Lane, David Lloyd-Jones, Ulster Orchestra, Hyperion
-Nielsen: Symphonies Nos. 2 & 3, Alan Gilbert, NY Philharmonic, Dacapo
-Villa-Lobos: Symphonies Nos. 6 & 7, Isaac Karabtchevsky, Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra, Naxos
-Scriabin: Poem of Ecstasy, Prometheus, Piano Concerto, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Lorin Maazel, London Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Decca

Like I said, I'm feeling a lot better now. I went to the doctor and they drugged me for another week. :D

Ah, then I have good news and bad news. The bad news, if you want this, this is the one to get. The good news is that it is 6.99 at Berkshire! They have a lot of hyperion there - worth a look there first for what you want (just picked up the Strauss Burlesque there from the Romantic Piano Concerto Series).

What did you get?

Berlin Phil. Quintet/BIS- 'Printemps' (French quintets: Bozza, Francaix, Ibert, Milhaud, Koechlin,... essential rep to be sure)

'20th Century French Wind Trios'/Cedille (Auric, Francaix, Ibert, Milhaud...)

'American Music Vol.1'... Boehm Quintet (Piston is the main draw for me here; the rest I have on other cds)

Yeah, I wasn't too impressed with their first installment. Let's hope the ones that follow are better. I thought the music lacked a lot of clarity and some of the tempi that were used sounded hurried so there was a lack of detail that was lost. I'm still very much in favor of St. Clair at this point.

Not surprised that St. Clair has more clarity.

Thanks. I don't know any of those recordings and will check them out. Wind music is woefully underrepresented in the classical repertoire, IMO. If only Beethoven (and Mozart and Haydn) had played flute or oboe....  Imagine, 16 Beethoven woodwind quintets!

I recently ripped the CPO box of Reicha wind quintets. I was doing some listening throughout and really enjoyed what I heard. I was bit nervous getting so much chamber wind music, but I think I will enjoy them. That might be something to consider as well.

They are wonderful music. I have a 2CD set on Hyperion (Prague Winds??) and a couple of Naxos disks (Michael Thompson Quintet), but would really like that cpo, or even to try out some of those Westwood disks. Reicha was the King of the Wind 5tet!

That Reicha box was one of my first purchases from JPC after I retired in 1991. They didn't have a web presence of course but did have a couple of retail stores (a large one in Bremen where my sister-in-law lived) and a monthly catalogue for mail orders. A friend of mine subscribed and got me hooked on JPC. The Reicha box was offered one month as a special: DM2.50 per disc or the equivalent today of 12 Euro for the 10 CDs ..an insane bargain, especially then when big cheap boxes were rare. It goes for, what? about 50 Euro now? That's still a bargain though: the music is wonderful...especially spread out over twenty years  :D

Yes that sure was a bargain. Although now it can be had new from Amazon themselves for ~$70, which is a big drop from where it used to be. To the point where I figure to pick it up before it goes OOP.  :)

I really do like that Hyperion version though; too bad they don't appear to have expanded on it.

Please do enlighten me with your favorites. I am partial to the minor keys. I'd love to start and finish with the cream though! :-* danker

Great story! At that price, I would love it too! :) I got it for a decent $50. JPC's shipping would have meant waiting until I accumulated enough stuff to make it worth it, and saving a couple bucks wasn't worth it anymore. The only negative is the sheer size of the set as they pack it in 10 regular size disc cases and put a carboard box around it (still). It's big - several times bigger than the Beethoven/Gilels box with only one disc difference!  Of course, the music sounds the same!

After just purchasing 22 CDs and CD sets for $350, I'm going officially cold turkey for the rest of 2012 and possibly for the first half of 2013. I'll be buying in 2013 if there's a sale on a premium label which takes up a big chunk of my wishlist, like Supraphon, Grand Piano, Alia Vox, or actually Sony.

And lo, Presto has a massive sale on Alia Vox CDs! There are 8 on my wishlist. And they put Ambroisie on sale, which means I could get 6 CDs of Rousset playing Bach for $32 and fill a gaping hole in my collection. And they have Supraphon and Linn on sale too, and a deep discount on pre-orders for the new Pollini DG box sets! Ugh, I hate suffering from CDCDCD!!!

That's the spirit, Brian! And don't forget Europadisc's 24-hour offers that is going to last another two or three weeks.

P.S.: The Rousset Bach box is on Naive and has been available for about the same price at Amazon for some time. ;) [EDIT: Please disregard the first part. I didn't know the two labels were related.]

OK, well, I've finally done it. I BOUGHT A CD I ALREADY HAD!! :o :o

This comes as quite a shock, for, I seriously don't do this,... and, especially this particular cd,... I'm dumbfounded. It's just a cheap little cd, but,... I already had it?? Whaaat??? It's the Wuorinen/Harvey/Peterson String Quartets cd on Koch, btw.

Well, didn't I find a cd recently that I WAS going to order, but then found. And now this. Wait, that was the OTHER Koch/Wuorinen cd!! :o :o

THAT does it. >:D >:D

And here I thought I was in the clear. ??? ??? ???

Having an 'extra' cd around is a CDCDCD trigger I hadn't thought of, but, right now I don't feel so good.

I think I will throw them in tomorrow's trash and be done with my folly. 8) It's the only way?
