No, to my great shame, I haven't yet! I've heard that the sound has a very nice "bloom" to it. For concert purposes, it's certainly got to be a huge improvement over its older sibling, the OC Performing Arts Center, which had to double as theater and concert hall. Most of the seats at OCPAC get pretty good sound (at least for theater stuff, opera and dance, with the band in the pit) but you seriously do not want to get stuck in the wrong seats there!

I think it's great that so many good venues have cropped up out west (including say, Seattle as well), to trump some of the mediocre ones.  I've never been to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, but a couple of friends said they actually walked out of a concert there -- the sound was so bad.

Anyway, please feel free to report on anything you hear in the new one!

Yes, it's great that these new halls are being built, with concern for the acoustics, but I can't help feeling a little ambivalent about the enormous cost of the Segerstrom (over $200 million) - that could pay for a lot of music programs in the schools, free music instruction and instruments for low income kids, etc. We need to invest in the next generation of music lovers and musicians, not just the buildings.

I remember in the '70s, the LA Phil used to visit Orange County and play in a high school auditorium! (Probably better acoustics than the Chandler, anyway...)  I promise to give a full report whenever I make it to the Hall. I'm surprised we don't have any other OC folks on this board.

Home run, Joan!  Totally agree with you here.

Yes, I think we do share some feelings on that issue! I like lots of vocal music including sopranos, but there's a certain indefinable point at which it becomes too loud/too high/too much vibrato all at once. It's funny that it doesn't bother me so much in a theatre, but I really feel it when listening to recordings. Which reminds me that I owe Harry a review in the operetta thread...
