I've heard everything from get a big magnet, lose the hard drive, remove the battery among other things.

Best Buy will get rid of it for a fee.  My old lap top is sitting in a corner collecting dust.

Thanks for any suggestions. :)

Wipe the hard drive first with something like Active @ kill disk.

Rip off the keyboard, take out the network card, the hard drive, all but 32Gb storage capacity, and the card and USB slots. Then uninstall the OS, and the software. Then slap an apple sticker on it and sell on eBay as an iPad for $699. (OH yes, and tell folks that if they try to modify it they will roast in hell for eternity.)

People will spot it out as a fake iPad unless you disable Adobe Flash, so it can't display 95% of the video on the web.

A sure way to make sure nobody can recover your information is to remove the hard drive and smash it to pieces with a sledge hammer.  I did this last summer for a desktop computer I was getting rid of.  It's a lot of fun, just be sure to wear safety glasses or goggles so you don't get a screw or scrap metal in your eye.  :)

You might find it more interesting to take it apart and see what's inside.

That still won't stop Them from reassembling it and owning your soul.

I'd go with our resident tea expert, Keemun.
Get the drive out and smash it to smithereens.

Smithereens.  Nice word that.

It would be mighty difficult to spin and read a smashed hard disk.  8)
