I tried to list what are hopefully his most significant movies.  And I noticed that I said directed and not acted.  That probably won't stop Philo or Eyeresist who would vote in Transformers just to prove for the 299th time that they are different! :D

My favorite is Citizen Kane, but I like all of those on the list except Mr. Arkadin and the Trial which I haven't seen.  I also like one that is not on the list-- The Lady from Shanghai.

While we're at it-- 70th anniversary of Citizen Kane ultimate edition came out this week.  What do you feel about the movie?  Awesome?  Good but overrated?  The "I understand it is a great movie based on it's influence, but personally don't care for it?", "Don't like it period."?

Cato

The Lady From Shanghai is another good one, although it has some curious scene e.g. a car wreck sequence defies all known laws of physics.  The shoot-out in the hall of mirrors, however, more than makes up for that curiosity.

Well, humbug: my own very first thought was of The Third Man.

DavidW

Yeah Brian for acting I would go with The Third Man too.

Cato, yes Lady from Shanghai is great.  The only thing that prevented me from adding it to the poll was the fact that IMDB said "(uncredited)".  I decided to stick to credited movies and lump uncredited movies with the lesser known stuff in the other category.

Favorite (changed, since I was reading too fast and missed "directed"):

Touch of Evil

Not far behind:

Citizen Kane
The Stranger

I like them all, even the ones butchered by studios (far too many). Favorites change: Touch of evil, The Trial ... currently it's Chimes at Midnight.

Has anyone seen a 2002 version of The Magnificent Ambersons which supposedly followed Welles' original script?

The reviews on Amazon are all over the place!  About as many 5-star reviews as 4-3-2-and-1-star reviews!

Third Man

Welles has a prominent part in the film, and steals the show for sure, but it was directed by Carol Reed.

It's funny how Welles is so magnetic in that film that it's often assumed to be one of his own.

It's in the poll question.  But you got me, it's not in the thread subject.  But, HAH, you spelled his name wrong TWICE!  HAH!  HAH!

DavidW

I kept the thread title simple.  I think I have another entry:

"you spend too much time on gmg if you automatically realize that DavidW's poll question will not be the same as the title!" :D :D

Sorry for the confusion Robert. :)  I'm approaching it based on direction, production especially since this is Citizen Kane week and that movie's greatness (big imo here) is more about Welles' artistic vision than his acting.  So I wanted to see if others thought that really was the highlight of his film-making career.

Touch of Evil, one of the best movies ever filmed... And The Lady from Shangai because of the blonde Rita, who paralyzes my heart every time when I watch this movie.  :)

What the hell does this even mean?

I voted Kane. Welles's other pics all have their qualities, but their compromises are sadly all too visible. (I must watched Othello again some day.)

And Transformers was a load of shite.
