In addition to the programming announcement of the BSO's 2010-11 season, reported on Tuesday's blog and, with a few little extras in Wednesday's paper, there's some news regarding the orchestra's recording projects.

One of the bonuses in having Marin Alsop as music director is that she brought a strong connection to the Naxos label with her, and the company was happy to add the BSO to its product line. The initial project was a cycle of Dvorak symphonies (Nos. 6-9). The first release, with the "New World," came out last season, the next, with the Seventh and Eighth symphonies, is due in June, but BSO subscribers can nab it early (and "at a special price," of course).

Next season, you will notice two Prokofiev symphonies, No. 1 and No. 6, on a program that Alsop will conduct. This marks the start of a new cycle that will be recorded by Naxos over the next few years; it will cover all seven of the composer's symphonies and possibly other orchestral works.

Never mind that, as the great experts have it, there is no classical music recording industry left and no real market for the CDs and downloads that keep being churned out by that dead industry. It's still understandable that orchestras want to get their work recorded, for marketing (well beyond the home turf) and, if you will, for posterity.

Very nice; cannot hurt to have some more Prokofiev cycles.  Very interested to see how she fares with the Second!

But what do YOU think of this news?  The paragraphs you provided come directly from the Baltimore Sun article.

I like Prokofiev's music and thought there be others who would look forward to this, particularly at Naxos' prices.    And the link to the season information may help east coast readers to make travel plans to take advantage of specific programs.
(an aside re travel: I remember the looks of incredulity when I was in London (UK) and went down and back to Southhampton to hear the Glagolitic Mass and Belshazzar's Feast on the same program (Rattle conducting).  The 90 min,, train ride was not much more than traveling some local 'burbs, and I knew I could make the last train out of London to where I was staying.)

Oooooh, how I long for the Baltimore recording of Pettersson's 8th under Commissiona to be released on CD. If Naxos could get the rights to that, THAT would be really something!

In the Prokofiev realm, my Weller and Kitaenko cycles, supported by the occasional discs from the likes of Malko, will keep me happy.

listener, do you live in the Baltimore area?  If so, can you give us any report on how well the Baltimore Symphony has been doing under Maestra Alsop's tenure?  I'm curious, because Ms. Alsop definitely raised the Colorado Symphony Orchestra here in Denver to a new level of excellence... 8)

No, I just have a news page that does a lot of preliminary sorting for me of topics of interest, and passing on what I think might interest readers here.
